something to show

I finally have something to show you!

I have been working and working and working on various projects, all of them close to completion, and this is the first to cross the finish line.  I finally quilted my first quilt!

It’s far from perfect and I won’t point out all the shortcomings as they should be glaringly obvious.  But it is DONE – hooray hooray!

I learned why quilters use a contrasting strip on the backside – not only does it help with fabric costs, but matching up busy prints is nerve wracking!

I did TRY to match them.  They stayed matched for as long as it took me to get from one end of the fabric to the other.  Then I gave up and reached for a coordinating strip – a decision that saved my sanity and my desire to ever quilt again.

I love it!  It’s snuggle size (about 50″ x 60″), the fabric got all crinkly in the dryer, the colors held fabulously, and it is actually FINISHED.

All in all, a good experience!  Now to finish some other items!

Nice! I never knew that’s why some quilters used contrasting strips. (I generally go for the extra-wide backing fabrics, but now I know a trick in case I don’t want to!)

It’s great! I never used a contrasting stripe, but it’s a great idea, and I think it looks more interesting than just a single-fabric back.

It’s so great!!!! I love the colors, the backing, the quilting, everything. I showed a client a picture of the quilt I made you and she asked, “Now why did you put a stripe on the back?”, with a definite tone that suggested I had ruined the whole thing by doing so. I personally like the contrast stripe; I think it makes the quilt more reversible, it provides visual interest, it saves $ like you said, and it’s just awesome!

Great job!!! I want to know about these fabrics you’ve purchased, too!

Oh E! That is beyond gorgeous! Makes me want to finish up the ones I started. My wool room is almost ready for me to start the quilting frenzy! along with the wool washing frenzy, the carding frenzy and the spinning frenze. Not to mention the knitting frenzy. Heh.

It’s beautiful…I’m seriously impressed that this is your first quilt! And while I can see that matching up a busy fabric would be nerve-wracking and the contrasting color saves you from that…I think it makes the back more interesting and pleasing to the eye. It was a perfect choice!

Please, PLEASE don’t ever try to match up prints on a seam. Its entirely unnecessary and crazymaking. The quilt looks great! Do you need more fabric yet?

    It is beautiful!

You did a great job– I like that you took the time to match up the prints…I have an old quilt of my grandmother’s and can remember looking at it when I was very young, the fact that she matched the prints was something I noticed…esp. when the match wasn’t quite perfect ;-)

I am so impressed with your quilt! I don’t know how you have the patience to do that (said with tongue firmly in cheek). Seriously, it’s a skill I’ve always admired and envied but never been called to acquire. Good for you.
