can you guess where I’ve been?

Yep, the annual family beach trip to Cape San Blas, Florida! Which, I’m happy to report, is oil free.
We had lovely sunsets,
beach bonfires (boys and their poking sticks!)
and fireworks!
It only rained one day, which was the perfect time for me to do this:
Yeah, you can pretty much throw out everything I said about not having room, money or time for another hobby. I went to the LQS (isn’t that cute?!?! Quilters say “LQS” like we say LYS!!!) the Friday afternoon before we left for the beach and you should’ve seen those ladies’ faces when I told them I wanted to hand sew quilt squares together on the beach. They tried to mask it, but they thought I was insane. I’m sure they had a good laugh when I left!
But I did find time to stitch, and sewing cotton squares together was easier than trying to knit wool on a Florida beach in July! I don’t think those ladies knew who they were talking to!
I finished it! Have you ever seen such wonky squares!?!? I have to laugh. I’ve debated ripping and redoing the whole thing on a machine – you know, with a seam guide – but I’m not going to. This is my first quilt. It’s hand sewn. I love it for its wonkiness, and I’ll be buying the backing material this week. I’m thinking a blue backing with red trim, and I’m planning to hand tie it, so the sewing should be minimal and will be done by machine if mine still works.
Vacation was fun, but I’ve missed you guys! I haven’t even opened Bloglines because I know it’ll be overwhelming, but I can’t wait to see what y’all have been up to!

Handsewing a quilt? You might be a little nuts at that. It’s beautiful, though. I love the colors and patterns you picked. Nice job!

Sounds like a wonderful trip! I think it’s a lovely first go at quilting. You’re hooked now, aren’t you? ;^)

I’m glad you found a clean beach to enjoy. It’s so nice to hear good news to temper the horror stories coming from the Gulf. Love your wonky quilt!

It looks great! Hey, how many people can say they’ve quilted at the beach!
Sounds like a lovely trip.

Looks like you had a great time! You’re very brave, I never would have the ‘patience’ to hand sew a quilt.
Learning how to do quilts is a great skill. Very handy when you need a quick baby shower gift and you don’t have time to knit. ;-)

OMG, it’s so super lovely! As much as sewing is great, it’s nothing compared to the all-the-time-24-7 availability of knitting. And I agree, your first quilt needs character, not perfection :)

I am so impressed you cannot believe. Quilting to me is like knitting is to most folks: I could never do that. I guess it’s all in the attitude, babe!
Be sure you take it back to the quilt shop to show those non-believers!

I think it’s wonderful! I love the wonkiness of it all and if a quilt is too perfect then it looks machine made, even when it isn’t. And, even though the quilts I’ve made so far are machine pieced, they’re still wonky!
Love, love, love the colors and that crab! Awesome.

Lovely! You’re making me jealous – I have a quilt top that I’ve been working on for years now and it’s still not done. And here you are finishing a quilt top in a matter of a weeks (if not days). That’s ok, my goal is to finish the top at least in August.
I hope you had a fabulous vacation!

‘K, you ARE nuts. But a cute kind of nuts. I don’t see anything wrong with wonky squares. Looks darn good to my unpracticed eye.

Jealous!
Lovely quilt – next time they give you crap, tell them Jinny Beyer hand sews hers.

Aaaw…that looks awesome!

Super awesome quilt. The ‘wonkyness’ makes it all the more lovely and the colors drew my eye immediately. This looks like the type of quilt top that will get a lot of cuddles from people who casually sit on the couch in the winter. :)

Love love love the crab shot!! Great shot!

So relieved to hear that “our” beach is oil-free! We canceled our trip this summer, and boy have I missed it! Cape San Blas is a little slice of heaven. Where do you stay??

I can’t believe you hand sewed that! You rock! :D

I think quilting is the perfect summertime hobby. You’re right that it’s much, much less sticky than wool in the heat, and it’s easier to get the sand out later! The quilt looks great, and I have seen much wonkier squares (they may or may not have been residents of my first quilt…). It looks lovely!

Okay, the beach is awesome and you have some beautiful photos but holy crap…you hand-sewed an entire quilt!?!? I’d have to agree with Jessi. You rock! It looks beautiful. Wonky squares and all!
