second verse, same as the first

Except with different yarn.

My yarn finally (thank you, volcano!) arrived from Shetland!  I immediately pushed all projects-in-progress aside and knit a swatch.

Not a ton of difference color-wise between the two (new swatch is on the right), but the real difference will come when I knit the entire cardigan.  Just as a reminder – I’m making Veronik Avery’s Fair Isle Cardigan from Knitting Classic Style.  The perfect summertime project!  ha.

The two colors of my substitute yarn that made me rethink this whole thing were olive and tan.  Here is the new, specified-yarn, olive and tan, atop the old:

Again, not a ton of difference, but I think it’ll contrast more than the substitute yarn did.

What have I been doing during all this time that I haven’t been blogging?  Well, I haven’t been working on my Denim Kaari sweater.  I got to the decreases for the sleeves, working both sleeves at the same time, and I just … stopped.

I am worried that the body is too long for my torso and will hit at the widest part of my hips, and I’m worried that the pockets will draw attention to an area that I’d like to DE-emphasize (namely, my stomach), so I put the whole thing on a shelf in my yarn armoire.  I think I’ll pull it out this weekend and sew the side seams, try it on and see if it’ll turn out to be wearable.  I’m 80% done with it, I need to either finish it or frog it.

Since I hit the mental roadblock with Kaari, I’ve been enjoying mindless knitting.

I have SEVERAL single socks lying about, and I decided it was high time to do something about it.  Voila!  Pair number one – from some old Regal yarn I got in the sale bin for $1/skein.  SB really liked these, said they were “cool” and made me wish I’d made a pair for him instead!

And pair number two!  Regia Bamboo I got from Little Knits for $2.50/skein.  I call them my Confetti Socks.  They’re 45% bamboo, which makes very silky socks.  These are going in the gift basket.  Yes, I’m actually getting ahead on my gift knitting this year, and am currently working on the second man sock for gift knitting!

My focus on knitting has really changed this year.  Last year was all sweaters, all the time.  While I still LOVE sweaters and want to make wearable garments (that is, after all, how I justify my yarn and fiber stash to myself!), I also want to make things that I’ve always wanted to make but weren’t high on my priority list.  Like having a good stash of handknit socks for gift giving.  Having handknit bread basket liners for when company comes over.  And knitting custom Christmas stockings – I cringe every year when I hang the old store bought ones!  What kind of knitter am I??!?!?!  Just kidding.  Sort of.

What’s on your list of things to knit that for some reason you haven’t?

That new shetland look absolutely lovely! I can’t get over how pretty that moss color is – but then I’m always a sucker for a nice green.

Speaking of green, I have my eye on a skein of Zephyr at my LYS to knit up into a bitterroot shawl. Now if only I could find a way around my freeze on new yarn purchases . . .

Handknit Christmas stockings have been on my list for a while. Maybe this will be the year?

The new yarn looks very pretty!

Thanks so much for the B&L color cards. Can’t wait to push through the current work project so I can have some time to peruse them properly!

Great socks! You knit fast… or something!

Can’t wait to see the new project. I love Veronik Avery’s work. I’m actually going to see her next week (I think), I need to pick up an order from her of the latest St. Denis Magazine. She’s actually moving to my neck of the woods soon and will be joining my knitting circle.

I did hand knit Christmas stockings for us one year. Unfortunately, they weren’t stored properly and moths got them. Grrr.

I’m wanting to knit more sweaters. I was on a sock binge for so long and suddenly I’m wanting to knit tanks and short sleeved cardigans. :)

new yarn is pretty, and I think you’re right – the new colors are a little clearer than the old ones.
I have that regia colorway, and received socks in that same colorway from someone else in a swap – popular choice!

Bread basket liners? We come from different worlds, you and I. :P Love the silky socks, too bad you’re not keeping them for yourself!

I’ve always wanted to knit a gorgeous colorwork sweater, but I like the IDEA of it, or rather the finished object, more than I like the process of stranded knitting.

I have a zillion things to knit that I haven’t gotten around to. Mostly just because there isn’t enough time! But I did plan on making a bi-colored cabled sweater earlier this year that got sidetracked when I couldn’t get the yarn I needed. Now that I have it, it’s too warm to wear it if I make it. I guess it will wait until fall.

I love the new colors. I think they will pop just enough.

Are you joining us for the Tour de Fleece this year? Team CrankyPants would love to have you. Not that you’re ever cranky or anything.

The new colours are much better! I especially like the new blue in the knitted swatch and the more lively but soft pinky beige in the balls.

Colourwork is tricky and its so hard to tell how colours will affect each other – I love seeing your abandoned choices as well as the new ones together to be able to see the differences!

I like the 2nd swatch better. Not that you asked.

Finish my sweaters. They are starting to stack up with problems worse than single socks.

The new colors will be worth it, (nice- rich chroma!)
