it’s that time of year

I love spring! Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day, with highs in the low 70s and a fabulous breeze. We opened all the windows in the house and worked outside most of the weekend.
Our tomato plants have the first blooms! We’ve tried growing tomatoes in the ground and in pots with limited success. This year, we took the leap and bought a complete kit from Classic Gardens. People swear by it, and they estimate we’ll reap 100-300 lbs. of tomatoes!
Saturday we went back to Classic Gardens for container plants. I couldn’t get excited over the offerings at Lowe’s. No sooner than the flowers were in their pots, Mack decided that laying in the freshly planted pots would be a great activity.
SB came up with a solution.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work as well as we hoped. Mack pushed the cutlery aside and squished the plants anyway. We’re trying dowels next.
We also got the cutting bed prepped and planted. Apparently hair makes a great fertilizer and I also heard that it’ll keep pests out of your garden, so I spread mine over the entire bed. Which is my way of telling you that I cut off all my hair a couple of weeks ago! I was a little sad, spreading it out (so shiny! so long!), but I am so glad I cut it! Tons easier to deal with, especially after lunchtime workouts and with the upcoming humidity this summer, no more frizzo!
Are you planting a garden this year?

We’ve had perfect weather, too. Your planting is ahead of ours. We’re looking forward to putting plants in the ground in the next few weeks.

Hooray for spring! Now let’s see a pic of the haircut!

Love the idea of the forks – too bad it didn’t work. I have some peas, lettuce and spinach starting to peek their heads up, but that’s about it. Still too early to plant frost-tender stuff here.

Your garden looks wonderful! I’m looking forward to starting a balcony herb garden after we move in a couple of weeks. Maybe I’ll even try some tomatoes, too!

I’ve just come in from my morning rounds to check on all the wee edibles peeking out of the garden – it is an exciting time of year!

I love spring too. Saddly, here, it’s not planting weather yet.
Love the fork idea, too bad it didn’t pan out as you’d have liked.

Ditto to Lynn’s comment. Hair, pls.
I have come to the conclusion that I deeply dislike gardening. I may have a pot or two of flowers, but that’s it. I’m even letting die the lawn that Rick so meticulously planted last year.

Red pepper flakes might help keep the kitty out of the flowers. They sniff around and normally don’t like the spicy smells.

You must be sidling slowly up to the camera, and then backing off. I save hair from the brush in a bag in the bathroom to scare off the rabbits and the deer. So far the croci foliage has been left alone.

I wonder whether hair would repel woodchucks… My mother reports seeing a large woodchuck heading in the direction of my house this morning. She doesn’t have a vegetable garden but I do and my peas are just up–a nice light lunch for Mr. Marmota!
Your hair is such a lovely color…I was quite relieved when I scrolled down and read what it was–not quite sure at first…

Pics of the new do! Last week another friend bobbed her hair. I haven’t seen it yet because I didn’t get to spinning or knitting last week.

Spring is my favorite time of year. I’ve got 3 kinds of tomatoes started in the house and I’ll be planting potatoes, cucumbers, greens beens, carrots and cantalope. Here in Michigan our last day of frost is between May 15th and 30th so I’ve got some time before I can start planting.

MOther’s Day is when it’s safe to start plants outdoors here, so I have a few more weeks. We opted for a big garden this year – I hope I can keep up! I have started some seeds indoors. If I can keep them alive for a few more weeks, I’ll have a head start on the season. I love picking my salad frsh from the garden.

I haven’t planted a single thing so far!! I’ve got to get busy!! Your planters look great!!

If the red pepper flakes don’t work, try citrus. Our cats hate the smell of anything lemony, orangey, etc. Just the peels make them cranky.
I’m participating in a community garden this year and looking forward to being able to dig in more dirt than I have in my little patch around the house.
And yes, let’s see the hairdo!

I love plant pictures! It took me bit to understand why you hat forks in your pots…now I get it!! Too bad it didn’t work though…seemed like a brilliant idea.
I do garden…last weekend managed to get my ‘early’ plants in…already sprouting! Have to wait until late May to put in tomatoes and other plants that can’t handle frost. Until then, I’ll live vicariously through your blooms!

Beautiful photos, and from the looks of things, it will be a good summer over here watching things grow!
Try as I might to not have a garden this year, old habits die hard, and we are mending the fence this week. There would not be enough hair to keep the “critters” away from my garden.
(but from time to time I do use the nasty bits from fleece near the rosebushes…)
