best laid plans, and all that

My yarn substitutions aren’t going to work.  I finished the ribbing and began the first colorwork section, which uses olive, camel and light gray.

The colors are indistinguishable from one another.  Which kind of makes the whole idea of a colorwork sweater moot.  I’ve been kicking myself ever since  Meg pointed out to me that I could order the specified yarn directly from the manufacturer for much, MUCH, less than a US retailer (the manufacturer sells the yarn for the same price to everyone, that’s why it’s so much more expensive at a retailer), and when I encountered the above color situation, that made up my mind.  The Briggs & Little will be repurposed for other projects and I will be ordering the specified yarn shortly!

This decision meant that I could restart my Denim Kaari sweater.  Now, I know that this sweater looks rather like a potato sack:

But I fell in love with it after seeing Smashing Puffin’s on Ravelry (actually, I love all of her projects) and besides, who doesn’t love pockets?!?!

I finished the back over the weekend, washed and dried more yarn, and got a decent start on the front.  I only have three skeins of yarn left to wash!  I’m hoping to knock this one out fairly quickly, as the temps are hovering in the 80s and I need more summertime tops to wear!

I knit most of this Friday night while I waited to be prepped for a sleep study.  Let me tell you – sleep studies SUCK!  Being hooked up to a dozen monitors with wire leads everywhere -  I felt like Frankenstein!  It took forever to fall asleep, I woke up eight times during the night, and got around five hours of fitful sleep.  And my fear was confirmed – I have sleep apnea.  Which means I get to go back for another sleep study and try out a CPAP machine, which will force a continuous supply of air into my lungs.  I’m really hoping this will be temporary.  The doctor told me that if I lose 20% of my body weight, it’s likely that the sleep apnea will go away, so diet and exercise have become even MORE important to me.  I’d already started exercising again (I’d been on hiatus since Thanksgiving) and making a real effort to eat well, but I’m definitely kicking things up a notch.  I’ll use the CPAP machine in the meantime because not only is sleep apnea caused by excess weight, but having it makes losing weight more difficult.  It’s kind of a circular cause-and-effect thing.

So, I hope you guys had a nicer weekend than I did!  Tell me about it!

Did it involve torturing your cat?  Heh.

Too bad about the colorwork but at least you found out before you got any further into the project. I think Dale has sleep apnea, too, but he won’t go for the sleep study test.

I think my husband has it too, he snores like the dickens and has this little gasping thing. There’s a reason I’m thrilled I fall right to sleep if not interrupted. If I’m asleep first, I don’t have to hear it.

Sorry that you had that much work done before the colorwork problem became clear, but congrats on pulling the plug now vs. later! It’s good news that you can get the required yarn at a decent price, definitely takes the sting out of it all.

So sorry to hear about the sleep apnea. I have insomnia. I dont sleep much, LOL.

That sucks that the B&L didn’t work out! At least you can use it for another project.

LOVE pockets. I even designed a pair of socks with a pocket in them! (They’re in my projects designs on Ravelry!)

I went to the prom! At age 38. Much more fun was had than I expected….

I love the Kaari sweater, too, even though it is probably the worst shape for my body that I could POSSIBLY make, I am constantly tempted!!

Sleep apnea can do a lot more harm than what you listed. I don’t say that to scare you but to give you added incentive to follow the reccomendations. It can cause high blood pressure and it’s associated problems, affect your heart rate, and it interferes with your sleep so that you don’t ever feel rested. Memory problems and headaches can also result. Give that CPAP machine a good effort.
(Can you tell that I am a nurse? LOL)

Fingers crossed for the sleep issues, and I’m sorry the colorwork didn’t work out. This week will be better.

Sorry about the B&L – and the sleep apnea too. I often wondered how people manage to sleep in those ‘clinic’ environments.

We torture the cat on a daily basis. Otherwise, what’s the point of having her around?

Oh, and can you tell us what the J&S website is? Their yarn is lovely, and it would be great to know where to get it for less.

I see what you mean about the colorwork issue. You will be happier, I think.

It is pretty important to wear the CPAP device. It is a good thing to get diagnosed BEFORE the heart and lungs are damaged forever.

Have you already frogged the B&L? I suspect that the difference among olive, camel, and light gray will be much more visible when you have knit a few more inches. It may still be too subtle for your taste, but it might work out.

Sleep apnea increases the risk of serious heart problems, iirc. Smokey has it but refuses to do anything except lose 5 lb/year. At this rate he’ll be at his goal weight at age 110. Actually, it’s the idea of sleeping with that machine that stops him. I can sympathize but still wish he would at least try it.

my dad uses one of those. I think he doesn’t hate it – would be lovely if you could get better rest without having to actually sleep more!

Wow, who knew sleep apnea was so common? DH is in the process of getting tested, but it’s a formality. I KNOW he has it, the signs are so classic. He’s fighting the idea of the cpap machine but I told him he has to at least try it.

Isn’t knitting great? If the yarn doesn’t work for one project, you can save it for another.

Sorry to hear about the sleep apnea…good luck with your diet/exercise program!

And while it’s too bad that the colors you bought didn’t work with the sweater, seems to me this is a blessing in disguise. You got 2 sweaters worth of yarn out of one pattern! :)
