45

This is the year I turn 45.
This is the year I first noticed that my hands are starting to look old.
I don’t mind it terribly. My hands create. They take bits of fluff and make yarn, then turn that yarn into useful, sometimes beautiful, objects. This is more valuable to me than remaining wrinkle-free.
This is the year that I learned, and am still learning, to accept loved ones for who they are – not who I think they should be. Although I will always hope that they are the best they can possibly be, it is important to love them unconditionally.
This is the year I decided to take care of my body. If I want this body to carry me around for another 45 years, it has to be strong. Diet and exercise are the key – I’ve lost one size and hope to lose a couple more. My flexibility is slowly returning – along with my waist. It’s nice to see.
This has been a hard year. It has been a year of learning and growing, a year of tears and parental woes. It’s been a year of pulling myself up and sometimes just getting through the day, thankful for the elliptical climber and my iPod, my wonderful supportive husband, my family and my friends – which includes all of you.
So – happy birthday to me, but thank you to you!

Happy Birthday! It’s good to learn, because if you didn’t you’d go through the same sh*t all over again every year. May your day be very special and the new year ahead go smoothly.

Happy Birthday! 45 is about the time I noticed the hands too. This year, it was the fine lines around my eyes.
But think what those represent. Making, laughing, loving, and yes, crying. It’s life and it’s what helps to make it wonderful.

whoa. That last comment was me. Apparently, my hands haven’t learned how to type well yet!

I’ve been noticing the hands too, especially with weight loss. What’s up with that?! Found any really good moisturizers yet?
Happy Birthday! Hope its filled with friends, family and all kinds of fibery goodness.
It looks like you’ll be sharing it with a new nephew that’s decided to make his presence known today. He, along with mom and dad are currently in the hospital making it happen. ;-) Things known – his name is Cole. He has knitwear ready for him. I just finished the cardigan yesterday – think he heard somehow? ;-)

Happy Birthday! This is a beautiful post and I love the way you looked back at your year. And you’re looking forward, too, and that’s wonderful. I have to admit, though, that my aging hands sort of bother me. I hate the look of raised veins on the back of my formerly smooth hands!

Happy Birthday, dear Elizabeth. With your outlook on life you’ll have no trouble surviving for another 45 years — at least!

oh HB!
Isn’t that something? It seems like the older you get the more you realize you have still to learn – seems like to me anyways.
I noticed this year that my hands are getting older – it’s kinda weird.

MANY happy birthday thoughts! The 40s are such important milestone years (I think, anyway) for so many things. Enjoy this decade and the many more to come!

hum. and I’ve always heard the memory is the first thing to go…
There is a saying about busy hands = a happy heart, but I don’t seem to be able to remember how it goes….
Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Elizabeth! Great reflective post! I could learn a few things from you. :-)

Happy Birthday! I didn’t notice your hands looking older at all; they were still the cute, pixie delicate hands they’ve always been to me! You could have big ol’ man hands like I have and then have old looking man hands, which trust me, sucks a lot.
Love you ;)

You sentiments and responsibility could go for turning ANY age. The 45 part is just a number. Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday! My Grandmother used to complain about her hands being so ugly and old because of arthritis and my mother would remind her that she had the most beautiful hands that created such wonderful things! So yes, you have beautiful hands!

Happy birthday! Good things happening. Can’t learn too early to just shine on the changes you can’t control. If you don’t, it gets overwhelming, because they keep happening, and it wastes energy to continuously grieve over them. I agree/like your transition to what your hands DO for you. 45 is a wonderful age. Old enough for wisdom, but not old enough to be old yet!

Happy Birthday, Elizabeth. I’ve missed you.

I’m sorry this is so late, but Happy Birthday! And you don’t look a day over 30 in my opinion. Good for you on the exercising. Maybe you can motivate me?
