SAFF 2009

It’s nice once you’ve been to a few fiber festivals. This was my third time to go to SAFF and this year I had a good idea what I was looking for and where I might find it. I wanted new-to-me fibers and blends, with some old favorites thrown in. I found plenty!
This lovely Politically Incorrect batt is from Sugarbee Art and Fiber, a blend of wool and mohair.
I knew that I wanted to buy some Wensleydale for dyeing and blending, mostly for socks because Wensleydale is strong and has a wonderful sheen. I figured I’d pick up a package of top from Little Barn, but when I saw these roving balls from Gwenyth Glynn Wensleydales, I was SO happy! I’d much rather have farm fiber over processed combed top.
I got some silk hankies from the gals at River’s Edge. I love spindle-spinning hankies because they’re so strong that the spindle rarely drops. Actually, that was how I learned to draft while spinning, which to me is the essence of spinning. I won’t say I never predraft, but only when spinning top or highly compacted fiber.
I bought the last three batts from Miss Babs’ booth on Saturday and I’ll probably hold onto these for awhile. She’s no longer making batts – too labor intensive and her handdyed yarn has really taken off. I’ve been a fan of her batts for quite some time. I’ve made a sweater incorporating yarn from her batts and sections of my Moderne Log Cabin blanket are from Miss Babs batts. I need to find another pusher.
This is the one and only skein of yarn that I bought – Bugga from The Sanguine Gryphon. After hearing everyone go on about this yarn, I had to try it.
There are a few purchases I didn’t photograph but will show when they become something. I finished my handspun sweater Thursday night and wore it in downtown Asheville on Sunday – pictures will be taken over the weekend. I also finished three (!!!) pairs of socks and was itching for something knit with larger needles and of course, out of handspun.
The beginnings of Staghorn from A Fine Fleece. I’m sorry I can’t Ravlink, but work has blocked Ravelry again. You can see a lovely version here, which is what made me give this sweater a second look. I’m using a mountain of three-ply Polwarth and it is the very definition of squishilicious.
You may be wondering why all my pictures are of THINGS and I have posted no pictures of PEOPLE. That would be because I took a grand total of two pictures the entire time. Yes, I’m a bad blogger, but also, I was BUSY! Busy catching up with Sandy, who is fabulous and totally gets me, busy admiring Jen’s BEST IN CATEGORY AND BEST IN SHOW!!! shawl, busy trying on Cristi’s Noro cotton sweater, busy eating ice cream with Grace and Regan and Julie, busy hanging with old friends and new, and busy kicking butt in Canasta! Sometimes pictures get in the way. Sometimes I don’t want to be a blogger, I just want to BE. I’m betting you’ll understand.

Now THAT’S a great haul! I really like the last batt there, it reminds me of the one I bought at Clermont from a farm here in NY (but that was Romney).
Woman, WHERE are you going to wear a sweater made from Polworth? And is that the Pol you got at SOAR?
Do you realize it’s our SOARiversary? :P

I’m betting you’re worried about blackmail from SAFF pictures. :) Heh. Just kidding! It was so much fun! I wish it never ended.

Looks like SAFF it similar to our OFFF. ;-) Photo evidence of all the fun that was had isn’t necessary. Seeing the loot, always fun!

Such yummy purchases! I’ll have to look into going to SAFF next year. Maybe we can finally talk to each other face to face. Same with Cristi. Besides, it’s a blast exploring new fiber festivals. Glad you had fun!

Wow – What a great haul! I only got to go to SAFF that one time and it looks like it still doesn’t disappoint. Can’t wait to see what you spin from all of this!

Beautiful!
Looks like your wheel-spindle and needles will all be well fed.
Fiber folk are the best part of festivals, eh?

Awesome purchases. Maybe I need to get you to give me a lesson on the drop spindle. Mine tends to attack other people in the room with me. LOL

Yay! For just being – sometimes picture taking totally can get in the way of experiencing things.
Glad to hear you had a great time – that’s so cool that you know Cristi – I love her blog and those kittehs!

So wishing I’d been able to get to SAFF and see you! Sounds like you had a great time – those are some lovely acquisitions :) And that handspun-cabled goodness is lovely. I pick up that book every single time I see it. About time to buy it already!
