eye candy friday – food edition

We’ve been going to our local farmer’s market earlyearly Saturday mornings (we try to get there when they open at 7) and have definitely been enjoying our spoils.
Last week I bought an extra large basket of peaches which were a bit riper than I’d thought. When bruises started appearing, I knew I had to make something with the peaches stat, so I combined them with some dewberries and made a pie. FYI – if you decide to do this too, add more sugar than Betty suggests – the dewberries are tart!
I even broke out the pie bird that came with my pan! I wasn’t sure what purpose he’d serve – he didn’t sing like I’d hoped – but the contents didn’t cook over either. SB thought he’d be a great straw to suck all the filling out of the pie!
The next night I made fried green tomatoes, which were incredible.
And I’ve done a bit of knitting. The back of the Minimalist Cardigan is finished and I should be well into the second front, but I thought I knew better than the pattern and was thwarted – twice! The one complaint about this cardi that I’ve seen on Ravelry is that the stockinette front edges roll. Of course, this is the nature of stockinette. I first thought that if I cast on twice the amount of edge stitches + 1, then made the center stitch a phoney seam a’la Elizabeth Zimmerman, that I would have a neat stockinette edging that lay flat. I was about 8″ into it before I realized that doubling the stitches would make it entirely too big and the stockinette would still sag, but sag horizontally – kinda like baggy ruffles, which wasn’t a look that appealed to me. So I started again. Thought I’d just cast on a few extra stitches to account for the edge roll. Planned on five stitches, but got carried away and cast on ten extra stitches. (If five is good, ten is better, right?) Figured out when I was 10″ inches in that ten extra stitches is too much fabric and it was sagging horribly. So I started over AGAIN, following the pattern TO THE LETTER, and I’m about 6″ in. I hope to finish both fronts over the weekend because man, this seed stitch is already getting old!
I should have a good bit of knitting time tomorrow, as we’re headed to Atlanta to visit IKEA (for kitchen organizational stuff) and REI (to look at tents), plus possible side trips to Cafe Sunflower and hopefully the DeKalb County Farmers Market! What will YOU be doing this weekend?

Oooh, that cardigan is going to be so pretty! I do love the look of seed stitch, even if I get tired of working it.
Weekends mean nothing to the unemployed. ;-)

Sounds like a great weekend at your end! I am planning several horse-boy outings, with both Bhen and Digger, some spinning and some knitting, and a bunch of R&R!

Hmm, since minimalist is in my queue, I’ll be interested in seeing if you solve the rolling stitches challenge. The pie looks delicious!

Whoa – that pie looks awesome.
As for the fried green tomatoes – I’ve always loved them when I’ve gotten them in restaurants, but when I’ve tried making them from my own green tomatoes, they’re WAY too tart. Is there a secret? The ones I’ve had at restaurants have never been tart.

Did you save any of the fried green tomatoes for me? I’m drooling!

Next time you have bruised peaches try peach-pepper jam. Peaches with a kick. ;-) I have family members that don’t think its Christmas unless they see a jar of it in their stocking. LOL I can give you the ‘secret’ if you’re interested.

True eye candy – all of it!
Thus far the weekend has included a bike ride, a run, some organizing, some knitting, and some reading… not bad!

The pie looks yummy! I think the birdie is to let out the hot steam and stop the pastry getting soggy and icky. :)
Loving the Minimalist as well and I’ve literally bought some yarn that I want to use for this or for Francis Revisited… decisions, decisions! Can’t wait to see yours, hopefully that’ll help me make up my mind. :)

So just put up with the rolling?
I LOVE the pie. That looks like food photography at its best.

Hey, those things are called Dewberries? We’ve got them growing wild up here in Michigan and I always thought they were wild blackberries. Huh.
All kudos to you for doing a seed-stitch sweater! All that front and back with the yarn would drive me nuts. It’s going to be gorgeous when it’s done.
