on the wheel and off

In between sporadic fits of sweater knitting, I’ve been doing a bit of spinning.

First off the wheel is a 70/30 wool/angora blend from a humongous batt I bought at SAFF in 2007. I’m kicking myself for not taking a picture of the batt – it was blanket-size – 8 ounces! I really love this navy tweedy yarn and I ended up with a bit over 600 yards of light worsted weight. I’m thinking either a vest (with contrasting yarn) or a cabled scarf.

Next I finished this – 3 ply of Falkland dyed by me in 2007 as well. I think there’s around 400 yards, if I recall correctly. I’ve been trying to spin up older items in my stash, sprinkle in some of the newer acquisitions and save the creme de la creme for occasional, treat spinning.

Speaking of creme de la creme, this yarn is IT. Rather, the fiber is IT. This is 450 yards of two ply spun from luscious batts from Abby in her Pink Lemonade colorway. That sounds goofy because I don’t really think Abby has colorways, I think she creates beautiful batts in whatever color is inspiring her at the moment so if you want ‘em, you’d better grab ‘em fast! Not that she couldn’t recreate them, but I don’t see a lot of repeats.
What can I say that I haven’t already said about Abby’s fiber? It’s like buttah to spin. The depth of color is incredible. That yarn looks peachy in the picture, but it’s actually layers of pink and peach, with yellow and multi-colored angelina thrown in for sparkle – it’s truly lovely.

And this is what I’m spinning now. The colors – I love (I dyed it myself!). The fiber is from the shepherdess in our guild – border/romney mix that’s really strong and wants to be thin. It has a great sheen to it, but tons of neps and vegetation. It’s almost a chore to spin – draft, draft, draft, stop the wheel entirely to pick out junk, repeat. However, I’m almost done with it and hope to have enough to make something lacy when it’s finished.
There’s your handspun fix for the day! ha. Next time, a progress report on the knits!

Thanks for the eye candy (I saw that pink and knew right away it had to be abby)! I haven’t touched my wheel in ages.

Oh! pretty! I really like the tweedy one from the mega batt (I’m a sucker for tweedy goodnees). From what I can see that handdyed one is going to be gorgeous. Looking forward to seeing it plied up.

You’ve been busy there missy, and what a lovely batch of fiber you have to show for it. I really like the colors of the one you dyed yourself.

How lovely! I like the concept of “treat spinning” too. Having finished up the big BFL project, I decided on a couple ounces of cashmere/silk to spin next. It makes for a nice variety.

I just love seeing other people’s handspun. Gorgeous! I can’t wait to see what the blue/green wool turns into.

You spin so quickly! I’ve been working diligently and still have the same fiber on the wheel as a week ago. The yarns are beautiful!!

They’re all so pretty! I think my faves are the gray & the blue/green last one. I can’t wait to see what you’ll make out of that one. How warm is it down south right now?

Beautiful yarn and your spinning looks so even — says she of the slubs. Please tell me you’ve been spinning for years. What kind of wheel do you have?
