saturday sky

Saturday Sky posts aren’t something I participate in generally, but with a sky like this, I had to post the picture. I love birch trees.

Some hours later, the sky looked like this. How do people get a good shot of the moon? This was taken while laying on my back on an enormous downed tree, the camera attached to a mini-tripod that rested on my chest while I held my breath and waited for the camera to gather enough light to take the picture. Not easy.

It was a beautiful weekend. We drove to the Sipsey Wilderness, only to find that we’d have to scrap our original backpacking plan because there wasn’t anywhere to park in the tiny trailhead parking lot! Despite being the third largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi, there aren’t that many miles of trail available (I roughly estimate 53 miles of trails) for the number of people utilizing the area. We drove to a larger lot, looked hard at the trail map and decided to wing it. I’m so glad we did. My rationale was that we could throw on the packs, hike for a couple of hours, and if we didn’t find a good campsite, we’d have enough time to get back to the car before dark. Although with that moon – we could’ve easily hiked after dusk!
We didn’t get a lot of mileage in, but sometimes it’s nice to have a trip that’s more about enjoying where you’re at than pushing yourself to the limit.

I love it when tree roots grow over rocks like this – it reminds me of this statue in Trafalgar Square. But cooler because it’s real and alive.
I accomplished quite a bit on my Cassidy cardigan as well. Friday night after I packed all my gear and bagged our meals, I brought out the reinforcements and had a seaming party:

All hail Lucy Neatby!!! My roomie Sandra at the January Spin-In brought her entire set of Lucy’s dvds and we watched the sections on finishing a garment. Let me tell you – it made all the difference in the world to actually SEE someone seam a garment! It’s one thing to read instructions, it’s an entirely different experience to watch it being done – I had that *click* moment and when I settled down to seam Cassidy, it was a million times easier than ever before! I want to unseam ALL my sweaters and re-seam them! Okay, that may be a bit much, but I could see a huge improvement in my seams and imagine it’ll only get better and easier. Hooray!
I finished seaming on the drive to the Sipsey and have started knitting the hood.

Four more inches and the button band to go!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend too!

Cassidy looks beautiful so far. The cables really pop in that last photo. I was staring at the fool moon outside my livingroom window last night and wanting to take a picture but while it looked big and beautiful to me, it never comes out as nice in my photos.

I loved that Statue in Trafalgar Square. Unfortunately when we were there in 2006 it was no longer there.

I’m a little envious it is warm enough for you to be hiking. It will be a few more months around here!

You are almost there on it.
Isn’t nature amazing?
For me to get a good moon shot I have to use a large tripod (normal size) and then set the timer so I am not bumping it in any way. No matter how still I think I am being, it is never still enough.

Those are wonderful pictures…up the trunk, across the rock. Really neat. Congratulations on seam progress! I will have to watch Lucy and see what she does. Mr. E always shames me and says I can’t send it out for someone else to do. He’s right.
