and the winner is…

Heather (seel87)! Who didn’t link to a blog, so I’m guessing that she’s blog-free! Heather, I’ve emailed you for your snail mail address!
Thanks to all for commenting! And thanks for ALL your comments ALL throughout the year – I definitely wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for you guys.
Speaking of doing this…I am already off to a slow start for NaKniSweMoDo. For the past several years, we’ve had family over for New Year’s Day brunch, and this year was no exception. So for the past week I’ve been cleaning and straightening and getting the house in order and haven’t hardly had time to knit and yesterday when the pistol shot signaling the start of NaKniSweMoDo rang out, I had to ignore it. I had other duties.

This is our standard New Year’s Day menu: Potato Boursin Frittata, a huge pot of black eyed peas, an ungodly amount of Sauteed Spinach with Peanuts (seriously, I think we used 7 bags of spinach leaves), and Sgt. Britty’s incredible buttermilk cornbread (he adds a can of Rotel – that’s what makes it special!). We serve a different dessert every year; this year it was Chocolat Pots d’ Creme topped with whipped cream. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures of the food because not everyone knows about the blog and they might certify me if I pulled out the camera and started snapping photos of dessert. I was really tempted, though! I did snap a pic of this cutie:

Onto the knitting: the swatch in the previous post is the Harris Tweed Stitch pattern for Veronik Avery’s Weekend Pullover, and yes, Laurie, it would make a WONDERFUL scarf! It’s easy to remember and lies flat. Perfect stitch for a scarf. And even better – if you don’t have the Fall 2006 issue of Interweave Knits, the errata for that issue contains the instructions for the Harris Tweed Stitch, so I have no pangs of guilt about posting it here!
HARRIS TWEED STITCH – Multiple of 4 stitches +2
Row 1: *k2, p2, repeat from * until last 2 stitches, k2
Row 2: *p2, k2, repeat from * until last 2 stitches, p2
Row 3 and 8: knit
Row 4 an d7: purl
Rows 5 and 6: repeat Row 1 and 2
Repeat rows 1-8 for pattern.
The yarn is Adrienne Vittadini’s Martina, a 70% wool, 30% silk yarn on Webs’ closeout. It is lovely. At $7.95/ball, it’s still rather pricey for a sweater, but that’s why I put it on my xmas list! Thanks, SB! I do believe I’ll order a few skeins in the sagey green color for a scarf.
However, I don’t know if this will be my January sweater. I love Veronik Avery’s designs and my Notre Dame de Grace is the ONLY set-in sleeve sweater I’ve made that doesn’t have sleeve cap issues. My hesitation stems from that stinking albatross around my neck – my weight. The Weekend Pullover is a lovely, classic sweater and (1) I’m not sure I want to knit it in the size I currently am and (2) I worry the design won’t be flattering. Not that many people have knit it according to Ravelry, and the folks who have made it are rather small. Perhaps I should save that pattern for next Fall, after months of working out and eating properly, which is, of course, one of my resolutions for 2009.
What do you think? Should I go for it, knowing that I’ll likely have to reknit it in a year WHEN my get-in-shape plan has gotten me in shape? Or should I start the year with a design that will still be wearable even after I lose weight, perhaps Twist or Cassidy?
Decisions, decisions.

If you’re not absolutely certain about it, then I think you should consider another pattern. I just looked at the Twist pattern and it’s really pretty.

Your guy’s a cutie, I concur. I like it when people have shining eyes, that extra twinkle makes me smile. :)
I would knit a sweater that is universally flattering and then see where you are by halfway through the year. If you’ve fallen off the wagon then just knit the sweater you want, but if you’re on track you know you made the right choice.

That’s a no brainer! Start with Twist or Cassidy. No reknitting. And Bonne Marie’s patterns have a reputation for being well written and fun.
I do love that stitch pattern, and will look for good yarn. Mr. E is making comments about wanting scarves that lie flat. Tnx for saving me from looking up my IK issue (my NY resolve is to get all my knit and spin stuff organized so I can lay my hands on anything, anywhere).

I say knit the thing. This year is all about not beating myself up for being Not a Victoria’s Secret model, for me.

I got yarn for Christmas, too (Kathmandu Queensland Aran Tweed, which is discontinued. Yippee!), but I’m not game enough to do the NaKniSwea….
And we also had the annual NY’s Day festivities, which have left me hosed. Or maybe it was the two desserts (a croque en bouche and a steamed chocolate pudding) and too much champagne.
I think the Cassidy, with its narrower vertical elements, is the more flattering of the two.

I think you have a great excuse to a slow leave from the gate. You’ll do just fine on your sweater knitting, I’m sure!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your cutie!
Didn’t I see a stack of unfinished sweaters a couple of months ago? I think that if they are still unfinished, you have started out ahead of time – you only have to do the finishing… or, are you holding back on us with some FO’s? :)

The house, spread and Britt look fantastic! I hope you had a great time!!!

I am personally a fan of making something that will make you happy, whatever that is. I figure that if I can’t actually wear something myself, I can find another home for it.
But I don’t have a problem giving stuff away (I’ve given away lace shawls), because I’m more of a process knitter than a product knitter anyway. :)

I would make it – it would make you happy now, and you can always buy more yarn later to make the other sweaters!

Happy New Year E. All the best!!
Love, love these pics :) That frittata sounds amazing!
