seaweed cowl

Did you know that cowls are the new scarves? There’s a flickr group and a Ravelry group, and now I can contribute to both!
This is the Seaweed Cowl, which was knit in a few hours last weekend. I used 50% silk, 50% wool yarn from Miss Babs and it was the perfect yarn for a cowl, the silk giving sheen and the wool warmth. She no longer carries this exact yarn, but Malabrigo would be a fine substitute, or any worsted weight wool or wool blend. I used a little over 100 yards.
The best part about this pattern is that it’s reversible! The right side is above…
and this is the wrong side. I actually prefer the wrong side because I like the more prominent lines.
And of course, a modeled shot.
Go on! Knit yourself a cowl!!! (Pattern also available as a pdf under Pages at the top right)
Materials:
110-120 yards worsted weight yarn
US size 8 circular needle (5.0 mm)
Stitch marker
Instructions:
Cast on 84 stitches and join, placing stitch marker at beginning of round
Rows 1-2: p4, k2
Rows 3-4: p3, k3
Rows 5-6: p2, k4
Rows 7-8: p1, *k4, p2, repeat from *, ending with k4, p1
Rows 9-10: p1, *k3, p3, repeat from *, ending with k3, p2
Rows 11-12: p1, *k2, p4, repeat from *, ending with k2, p3
Repeat Rows 1-12 four times, bind off by purling two together, slip stitch back to needle, purl 2 tog, repeat until all stitches are bound off.

Also – thank you for all your kind words! I’m out of my funk, I know I need to vary my workouts so I don’t get bored so I’m studying the YMCA schedule for next week and plan to add a new and different class at least once a week to keep it fresh. The vest idea is still marinating, but right now I’m cowl-crazy, crazy for cowls, kookoo for cocoa puffs, so that’s okay. You guys made me feel much better, and I thank you!

Excellent! I’ve been wanting to jump on the cowl bandwagon myself. I have some recently spun wool/silk/angora that is crazy soft but not my colors (bright pink and orange – the batt was a gift), so I think my kid’s getting a cowl from it for Christmas.

Have I? I love the idea, and I love the look but…I think I have too many chins to work a cowl.
Your pattern is awesome though…I might just have to try it out. I like the reversibility — is that even a word?

Thanks for posting the pattern for the cowl. They hadn’t fully grabbed my attention but your post has me convinced it’s worth a try. Especially using yarn with great sheen and drape.
BTW, muscle weighs more than fat so there is a point where a person looses inches but not pounds as the muscles are worked and develop. Mentally very tough so focus on the inches for now.
