what I’m thinking

Posted on | July 23, 2008 | 14 Comments

1.  I’m getting a bit tired of working out every day.  I always feel better afterwards, but it’s getting to be monotonous.  The scale hasn’t budged since I got back to my pre-vacation weight, but my pants fit looser.  That’s something, right?  Still, if I could see a few pounds drop off, it’d do wonders for my motivation.

2.  I’ve started several new projects and actually finished a small one, but I’m not uber-excited about any of them.  I got really excited last week when I started a new scarf out of two shades of fabulous pink merino/silk yarn, then had a flash of brilliance when I decided to incorporate ORANGE into the mix because light pink, dark pink and orange look incredible together, but then I thought, why don’t I make this a vest instead of a scarf?  How cool would that be?  And of course the project stalled because really, am I going to wear a pink/pink/orange striped vest?  I mean, I have visions of wearing one and love the IDEA of making and wearing it, but reality and a quick look in my closet tell me that I am a boring dresser.  Black, brown, some blue and occasionally a spot of color, but there is nothing, NOTHING in my closet that even comes close to a pink/pink/orange vest.  Which makes me sad because I so want to be that person.

3.  I’ll be posting a pattern for the small item that I knit, as soon as I can take pictures.

4.  Have I mentioned that I’m going to the retreat portion of SOAR?  I’d like to get excited about it, but I have no hotel room and despite assurances that the room situation will be sorted out, I’m really stressing about it.  I wonder if I can camp in the Poconos in October?  It might be cold, but I do have plenty of wool to wear.

5.  I think the summer doldrums have hit.

I’d take looser pants over an otherwise undetectable scale movement anyday.
Yeah, make a scarf. Unless you plan to go hiking during hunting season!

Muscle weights more than fat. You must be gaining muscle. Working out is like housework…never done.
Make a simple vest and buy a bright blouse to wear under it. You’ll wear it for more years if it’s not too colorful.

yuck. stick with it. don’t get discouraged. whether you see any difference or not, it’s good for your heart and your mind just the same. have a great time at SOAR. will look forward to lots of photos. always wanted to visit the Poconos.

Margene is right. A better indicator of whether or not your workout is working is how tight or loose fitting your clothes are. f it’s starting to get boring, then change it up with a different activity. If your body is used to your workout, then weight loss is not going to be as noticeable because your body has developed a “tolerance” to what you’re doing. So, if you were to switch it up from say the treadmill to the stationary bike, you’ll see a jump start in the weight loss again because you’re using different muscles and your body has to adjust to a new exercise.

Sorry for the long post. I’ve probably already told you stuff you already know. :D

Stick the scale outside next to the rubbish bins and move on. Your clothing tells the only truth you’ll ever need.

(Says the woman who has a habit of shrinking some of her favorite things. Sigh.)

I can definitely relate to wanting to be that person in the pink/pink/orange vest, but who says you can’t wear one over a nice long-sleeved black T and black pants? :) You could try some kind of poncho derivative if there’s any chance it will get cold enough to wear it in the deep south.

Hope your doldrums disappear soon! Just have a look (from the comfort of your AC) at all those zinnias blooming!

That vest as described would look gorgeous on you — make it!! It’ll look wonderful with black or navy slacks/skirt/dress.

I think the hot weather has gotten everyone down. It is too dang hot to even think much else knit. SOAR will be a wonderful trip!

I’m in training mode and I almost always gain weight at first – it’s got to be that whole muscle vs. fat argument. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. Clothes fitting better is a great motivator – the sizes and weights are tough. And the damn sizes keep changing – so pfffft to them ;) You’re doing great!

Seriously – this summer? so over it.

Oh, Elizabeth, if you want to be that person, then BE that person. Life is too short to just think about
it. Imagine how that vest would pop against a black shirt. It would be gorgeous! YOU would be gorgeous!
So go ahead, make the vest. If nothing else, you can just wear it around the house and feel good that
    you’re wearing such fun colors.

Looser pants beats a lower number on the scale hands down! I suspect the first step in being that person is to have something bright to wear. I’d make the vest.

Yay for looser pants! That is a truer measure than the scale, as Margene pointed out (weight of muscle vs. the weight of fat). I am also a conservative dresser who sometimes wishes she were more… colorful. Double dog dare you to wear something bright — scarf, vest, whatever :-)

I’d also take the loose-fitting pants.

Sympathies on the pink/pink/orange issue. I’m a very boring dresser too, but I’ve pretty much made my peace with that.

Congrats on SOAR. I’ve pretty much given up hope that I’ll ever have the perfect combination of time/money/motivation to go at all. Oh well.

Looser pants! That’s wonderful. It’s so easy to get hung up on numbers. Hope you’re able to shake up your workout and re-invigorate yourself — you’re doing great!

I try to break out of my dressing rut now and again, only to find that even my breakout choices are predictable — what is that about?

I’m sure everything will work out for SOAR – sounds like fun.
