EZ was a genius

Of course you all know who I mean by EZ, don’t you?

Yesterday afternoon, I wanted to knit something.  Something quick, something not socks.  I’d cleared out my Ravelry queue earlier in the week and stupidly deleted a hat that I immediately then wanted to knit but I couldn’t remember the name of it.  I thought I remembered the hat being modeled by an Interweave model (you get to know who these girls model for), so I started thumbing through my Interweave Knits and although I didn’t find the pattern I was looking for, I found this:

The Maltese Fisherman’s hat, published in Knitter’s Almanac and available as a free download from Interweave until July 31st.  This hat is pure genius.  It fits snuggly on the head (MY head, I had the boy model it because I spent the weekend blissfully make-up free), and the short rows on the back of the neck not only produce the earflaps, but ensure a good fit for the back of the head:

Isn’t that great?  I love this hat and can’t wait until the weather’s cool enough to wear it backpacking!

Specs:

Pattern:  Maltese Fisherman’s Hat, link above

Yarn:  Handspun from Sari batts by the Enchanted Knoll (LOVED the batts, love the yarn)

Needle:  US 8 circular, US 7 dpns

The top’s a little funky, but I like it.  Whimsical is a nice change from the norm.

I did a lot of spinning this weekend and will have pics of that next post.  I sewed the collar to the comfy sweater and … I don’t like it.  I’ll probably frog the whole thing rather than knit a different type of collar because I think the yarn should be knit with a smaller needle.  I’m not bummed about it though, it was a fast knit, and I know I’ll use the yarn again in a future, hopefully successful, project!

In garden news, we FINALLY have flowers on our tomato plants!  Or, maybe I should say, Mack’s tomato plants…

Mack certainly does look proud and possessive about those tomato plants :-)

I love EZ. She was pure genius. My tomatoes love coffee grounds spread around the soil, but you may not want the cat to smell like a barista.

What is it about cats that makes them think they own everything??

I love that hat! EZ was a genius. I’m always amazed at what she could do with plain garter stitch.

    Dear Mack,
I love you. You are so handsome! I guess your mommy would not be happy if you came to live with me, but I can dream, can’t I? (lol)

    The hat is great.

The cat is so cute — does he come in reeking of tomatoes? That’s a pretty distinctive smell for a cat to get into – my cats give our tomatoes a wide berth.

The hat is beautiful! Seeing how handspun knits up never ceases to give me a thrill. You just can’t buy that look, you have to spin it up yourself. Very nice!

Love that EZ hat. I haven’t made that one, maybe I’ll copy you and use some handspun.
