stash busting – the BBP (or Big Blanket Project)

I started knitting a blanket out of handspun this week. I told a friend recently that I’m feeling overwhelmed by all the handspun I have and was thinking of knitting a blanket. She kind of scoffed at me; I’m pretty sure she was doubtful I had that much handspun that I’d need to tackle a project so large as a blanket.
Well, yes. Yes, I do. I’m pretty sure I do anyway. Most of my handspun is from 4 oz of fiber and the yardage isn’t sufficient for much besides scarves, so…I’m knitting a blanket!
It’s Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Knitted Garter Stitch Blanket from The Opinionated Knitter, and Mandy made a gorgeous, crazy one out of leftover bits of yarn that I love. I have no idea if my colors will go together – a log cabin or mitered square blanket may have been a safer bet, but you see…I’m a fickle knitter. I couldn’t commit to the cutting of the handspun that knitting tons of strips or squares would require. What if I didn’t like it? I’d be left with ten yard strips of various colors of handspun. And all those ends? Oy. Nothankyou, this pattern is more to my liking.
Even if it doesn’t reach artistic heights, it will be warm and comfy and I’ll actually get to see my handspun in action rather than wasting away in the Tower of Rubbermaid.
I think SB approves.

Awesome. Handspun Knitted Garter Stitch Blanket. Just typing it makes me all jittery with happiness. I totally understand that you aren’t sure yet about the colors, but know this: in the end you’ll have a Very Warm Blanket. That’s good enough for me. :)

Fantastic! I’ve been giving some thought to a blanket myself, but not from handspun. Maybe someday when I get my mojo back. :-(

A handspun blanket is one of the next things I want to start working on, except I am thinking of weaving a blanket on my knitter’s loom… I think it would make such a special project and an awesome blanket. I think yours has inspired me to get started!

That’s a great idea. I have a lot of 4 oz handspun skeins, too. Hmmm.

Great idea. I have that blanket qued up over at Ravelery. I hadn’t considered handspun, but it will be perfect.
I don’t think the colors have to “match” either, from the sleection I see on the table there it will be perfect.

This is going to be such a gorgeous blanket!
You have a looooot of handspun – way to go. :-)
You are going to love snuggling up under this blanket on many nights to come. It would be perfect for camping…though I guess it would take up a lot of room in a backpack, so maybe not a hike in camping trip.

Your handspun is beautiful all knitted up. It’s going to make a beautiful, warm blanket. And if the blanket turns out to not be so
warm, hey, the boyfriend is cute! :-) Have a good weekend.

All your yarn is gorgeous and will look GREAT when knit into a blanket!!! It will be nice to snuggle under next winter, knowing each color, each yarn was spun by you!!!

WOW!!! I’ve told you before, and i’ll say it again – you are sooooo quick! It was just a couple of weeks ago you were talking about getting all your handspun out to knit a blanket and would you look at that pile! I love the idea of getting use out of ALL of the handspun that is not designated for another project. Can’t wait to see the finished product :)

That blanket is going to be beautiful!

Excellent! I was wondering what you were going to do with all of that. I can’t wait to see it finished.

That blanket will be awesome. As for whether the colors will go together, I remember something I read about decorating one’s house: the unifying theme is that YOU chose all those elements. The unifying theme is YOU.
Your SB is total hunk.
