yarn as a metaphor

When we were hiking the other week, I started thinking about fiber and how it relates to our lives.  How it is so similar to our lives, our very essence.

We humans are a lot like fiber.  When we’re born, we’re soft bits of fluff.  We have a lot of potential, but we’re not very strong.  We rely on others to care for us, to help us grow and mature.

Our experiences are twists in the fiber of our personalities.  The more experiences we have, the stronger we become.  Too little twist and we come apart easily; too much twist and we become hard and biased.  It takes just the right amount of twist to maintain the softness of love, grace and tenderness and yet still be strong.

Along the path, we ply ourselves with others.  Sometimes we make poor choices, we think someone is a sturdy wool when they’re acrylic in disguise.  Unplying is never easy and can leave you feeling like a snarled mess.  I think it takes some degree of mistakes to be able to recognize quality and make good fiber choices.

When you come across the right person with whom to ply yourself – the person who strengthens your weaknesses and together, you’re balanced - it makes it all the sweeter.

Lovely way of putting it. I read that second to last sentence as “it makes it all the sweater”. Darn tootin.

You are SOOOOO great! Love the message and the pic! You definitely made me smile at the end of a long day. But man, ease up a little on the acrylics, yeah? There’s something to be said for cheap and easy access, you know?

This is one of the sweetest (and truest) fiber/life metaphors I’ve read. You’re a wise woman E :) That shot of you two is perfect!
