SAFF – the story

Posted on | October 31, 2007 | 7 Comments

Where to begin.  SAFF was great!  I haven’t photographed the loot in its entirety and I don’t think I will.  I think I’ll take pictures as I do something with it; it’ll be more fun that way and I won’t have to own up to my gluttony all at once!  Suffice it to say, I did my part to support small fiber artisans!  Ooohhh, okay.  Just one thing!

This is the Shetland fleece I bought.  It’s yummy.  How do I know?

I’ve already spun some up on the spindle.  This is next year’s SAFF sweater, in the raw.  Jenifleur, you up for another challenge???

It’s funny how your interests change as you develop your skills as a knitter or spinner.  Last year, I was crazy for handpainted rovings and undyed roving because I was just getting used to my spindle and really wanted to start dyeing.  Since then, I’ve played around with dyeing enough that unless something is truly remarkable, I’d rather dye it myself - it’s more fun!

This year, I went crazy for batts and naturally-colored fiber.  I bought quite a few batts from Miss Babs.  She gave me some tips on spinning to keep the colors together on handpainted roving so you have stripes with a little bit of barberpoling, instead of barberpoling with a little bit of stripes.  I’ll post her tips when I put them into practice and can document it with photos.  I also got an enormous, 9 oz. merino/angora batt with the most amazing blues and purples in it from Delly’s Delights.  They had nuno felted a small wrap with the same fibers and colors in my batt and it was just beautiful.  I have no idea how to nuno felt, but it’s something I’d like to learn!

I did a pretty good job of sticking to my Rules.  I don’t think I made a fool of myself (too much) and there’s only one purchase I probably should’ve thought about more.  Blogfree Ginny acted as my cheerleader; I think she bragged about my SAFF sweater more than I did – even making me pull it out of my backpack to show off!

The best part about SAFF is, of course, the people.  Unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough time to see everyone!  I can’t believe I missed Shannon!  We’ve been visiting each others’ blogs for awhile now and I was really looking forward to meeting her.  Ah well.  I did get to meet lots of people, I just wish I’d had more TIIIIIMMME!!

This was taken at the Ravelry blogger meet-up.  That’s KatieJ on the left, Dyetom on the far right and I know that’s the back of Jane‘s head, but I’m not sure about names for the other folks.  I had a natural dye class (with Jen, who I finally got to meet! YAY!) from 2-5 Saturday, so as soon as I could, I bee-lined it over to the blue barn to meet folks but a lot of people had already left.  The class seriously cut into my shopping time, which is probably a good thing in retrospect, but also, I felt that if I didn’t grab something RIGHT THEN, I wouldn’t get it because (except for Miss Babs’ booth), there WAS no second pass-through.  I missed about a third of the vendors entirely and I didn’t even SEE the sheep!

We had an impromptu spin/knit-in in our suite Saturday night.  Ginny is taking pictures of Allison’s newly completed entrelac socks while Jodi is spinning on Sandy‘s wheel and you can barely see Grace‘s pajama bottoms in the corner.  It was SO fun to hang out with everyone!  I should’ve busted out the whiskey, though, I was still feeling the sinus infection and alcohol IS a natural decongestant!

No, the room was not that cold!  Allison just had a severe case of finishitis.  I was hoping to be infected, but so far am asymptomatic…

Darlene, Tonni and Laura also stopped by the room but by then I was in such a decongestant fog that I didn’t take pictures.

Whew.  I think my linker is broken!!!  And I didn’t even TALK about dinner Friday night with ClaudiaJill and Jacquie!

Gin termed this Fiber Fatigue, and I think she’s hit it spot on.

That fleece looks so beautiful! Look at the sheen on it. Hanging out with grrlfriends while knitting and spinning is one of the very best things, eh?

Lovely fleece. Looks like a wonderful time. I love the roving hanging off the chair in the background. ;)

There is so much packed into this post!
Your fleece! Wow. It is gorgeous. And you are already spinning it – look at you go.
You have made such huge strides in one year – that is inspiring hope in me. :-)
It looks like despite your sinusitis you had a great time hanging out with fibre fanatics – soooo I might be a little envious —- of the 9 oz. batt! We really do need to see a picture of that.
If I wasn’t signed up for a lace class this Saturday, I think I would have to be spinning.

Looks like an awesome time. I just want to squish the fleece, then jump into a big vat of it. ;)
