in love with tweed

I have a real love affair going on with all things tweedy.
This is Rowanspun 4 ply, sadly discontinued and bought for a really good price from Cucumber Patch – UK. I may have bought quite a bit of this yarn, actually. Enough for a couple of sweaters and possibly a vest.
It’s fingering weight yarn, so my options are to double the yarn or knit on really small needles. I did a search on Ravelry for sweater patterns in fingering weight yarn and found this:
Is that not the cutest sweater ever? Check out the sleeve detail:
I love it! I won’t be using sparkly yarn for the accent, but a contrasting color instead. The pattern is also written to be knit flat, but I’m going to take a stab at converting it to in-the-round and possibly top-down, as it IS a raglan and that shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out. I guess you could say I’m using it more as a guide rather than following it to the letter.
Last night I swatched to see what color combo I liked best.
I like them all, but I’m going with the two shades of green for two reasons. First, I’m not a teensy little model and wearing horizontal stripes is not really something I’d consider flattering to my body type. However, I love them! Love the stripes! I’m thinking that stripes in two shades of the same color will let me feel the stripey-love without making me look like a portly sailor. We shall see. My second reason for using the green is purely practical – I have one bag of each of the green, and two bags of the olive-brown. Using the olive-brown as my contrast yarn allows me to knit two sweaters from the yarn I have. I already have a sweater idea for the olive-brown yarn, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves!
My only concern is that the yarn is very thin. I swatched on the recommended needle size for both the pattern and the yarn and it’s pretty airy.
Which might not be bad for an Alabama winter, but perhaps not so good for modesty. I’m going to wash the swatch and see if the yarn blooms any with washing, then adjust my needle size if needed.
I hope everyone has a great weekend! My sweater is dry so steeking will occur at the Trailing Yarn household this weekend! I’m planning to wait until Sunday morning so I’ll have an excuse to start drinking early in the day. Heh.

That Laurie recently did a few guest blogs on the Harlot’s site about converting bottom-up to top-down raglan…

Nice tweedy yarn. Reminds me I have to start the cable on my tweed socks. Good luck with steeking.

If there is anything this world needs more of, it is tweed.

Oh my, I LOVE that sweater! I agree that the green/green stripe combo is the way to go. If I were to make that pattern, I would do the same thing. I’m looking forward to seeing the progress on this one!
