spin knit dye

This is what I’ve been doing lately.

Last Saturday during the fleece washing, I finished spinning the Louet pencil roving and plied it up.  I have no idea what this will become, but it was very easy to spin and I really loved seeing the colors after spinning all that brown wool for my sweater.

Now I’m spinning fuzzy black caterpillars!  Actually it’s hand-carded alpaca, which I plan to incorporate into the yoke of my SAFF sweater.  I’ve been debating on the pattern for the yoke and while I still want to check some fair isle books out of the library to review, Margene’s post yesterday reminded me that an EZ fair isle yoke is a thing of beauty and a hard design to beat.  But that requires more colors, and so - more spinning!

I started new husband socks from the Lorna’s Laces I treated myself to last week.  This is the first time I’ve knit with LL and I love it!  It’s tightly plied so it’s not splitty at all, and this pattern – Gentleman’s Fancy Sock from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush – really flies on the needles.  Must be the eight row repeat.  But – word of warning – if you hate doing 2×2 ribbing, if it’s everything you can do to soldier through a 1″ ribbed cuff, you might want to steer clear of this pattern.  The whole sock is 2×2 ribbing, it just changes up a little.  Good thing I love my husband!

Lastly, I’ve been dyeing 8 oz. of different fibers each night this week.  I’ve dyed Corriedale, BFL, Shetland, Superwash Merino and domestic wool top.

These are the fruits of my labors.  As you can see, I’ve been putting my Twisted Sisters book to good use!  I’m not 100% comfortable with the acidity of the dyebath (I think it’s too acidic and might be causing the fibers to lose some of their softness), but I’m loving the hot pour method and the colors I’m getting!

I’ll tell you next week why I’m dyeing all these rovings (I’m such a tease!).

I hope everyone has a safe and happy long weekend – if Monday’s a holiday for you!  I’m taking a two day flax spinning workshop through my guild this weekend.  The worshop is being taught by Linda Beckley from Missouri, who also teaches at John C. Campbell.  I’m really excited to be spending time with fiber folk and learning how to make linen!

Very pretty sock – and not one I’ll be doing (said the anti-ribbing girl). ;)

You can’t possibly be dying all that roving for yourself. What are you up to? :-)

I thought that LL sock was a worsted weight scarf in the extreme close-up. Hmmmm, food for thought; maybe I need to make one more red scarf… Although it wouldn’t be nearly as pretty as the sock.

Don’t feel bad; I’m still spinning for my sweater. I’m down to my last 2.25 oz of roving for it and I’m not convinced I have enough yarn, how’s that for suck?

Your rovings are beautiful. I bet the lack of softness goes away as soon as it’s a teeny bit predrafted.

Ooh, flax! I have about 5 stricks in my stash. I’ve only spun a little, and it’s been years since I tried.

One year I made a homemade distaff out of a tree branch and used it with some flax and a drop spindle. I even took it to the Renaissance Festival to spin. Only problem was, the distaff with the fiber on it looked like a huge q-tip. I got several comments to that effect, which kinda spoiled the look I was going for. :)

Seeing that yarn makes me want to spin! Gosh – I could get into real trouble at SAFF this year.

Ooo look at all that pretty fiber. The sock looks great. They should say up for sure with all that ribbing.

Oh, man. I *hope* that’s the start of an etsy store, like people are positing.

Because I may have just fallen a little bit in love with a few of those roving colorways, and we are pining to be together. I’m just sayin’.
