yesterday on the way home

I noticed a rainbow in the sky! I immediately pulled over to take a picture for you. It seems like I don’t see as many rainbows as I used to. That might have something to do with taking the time to look for them.
I pulled over right in front of a house that I’m curious about. This house sits a half block off the interstate exit ramp and is surrounded by businesses. It looks as though it doesn’t belong there.
For that reason, I love this house. Even though I know it’s there, I’m always surprised to see it. I’d like to take the little wooden chair on the porch home with me, and I really want to see the inside. I know someone lives there because I’ve seen lights on when I drive down that street at night. I’m curious about it – why is this house all by itself, wedged in between two businesses and at least five blocks from another home? How long has it been there, who lives there, what’s its history? Were babies born there? Did people die there? Did people raise their kids there? What schools did they attend?
These are the things I think about on my drive home.

I’m guessing that an elderly person or couple live there. They raised their kids, the businesses grew up around them, and the neighborhood changed. They are comfortable in the house and/or are too old to even think about moving. Great porch, too — I’d think twice about leaving it myself.

You are spot on regarding “taking the time to look for them.” I was a passenger in a car last week, driving in my own neighborhood and just noticed a house I must have passed literally thousands of times. Good reminder to turn off the iPod, hang up the phone, put down the newspaper and experience the actual world you are inhabiting at that moment in time. Thanks, E.

Pretty rainbow.
You should be able to go to the court house and get some info on it if you really want to know. ;) There is more on public reccord than people realize.

Lovely. I’m glad you took the time to stop and look around. And that house is intriguing – I always speculate on houses that are in odd places and wonder about the people and history of it.
