White Stripes Sauna and oh yeah, some fiber
Posted on | July 31, 2007 | 7 Comments
I’ll start off with the fiber because I know not everyone wants a concert review, but we ALL want fiber, right?
This is the yarn I made over the weekend that I decided not to use for my sweater. Superwash wool spun from batts from Miss Babs. The one on the left is 350 yards and the other two are each 175 yards. I had ideas of mixing a commercial yarn like Cascade 220 or Lamb’s Pride with the larger skein and using the other two as accents but it’s not really what I want to do.
I really want to cut steeks.
Have you picked yourself up off the floor yet? Okay. Yes, I really want to knit an Icelandic yoke cardigan and cut steeks and install a zipper and that puts superwash wool completely out of the running. You need a sticky wool for steeks.
Meet bobbin #1. He’s even wearing a name tag. I will be labeling my bobbins as recommended by Amy in this article, plying the first bobbin with the last bobbin spun and working my way in. Hopefully this will result in a consistent yarn.
In the meanwhile, the superwash will go into the handspun stash for a smaller project. I have two more batts from Miss Babs, and I highly recommend her fiber. These were very easy to spin and also a great price - $10 for a 4 oz. batt is a bargain, in my books. She was running an inventory clearance, so get ‘em while you can, folks!
I’ll be busy spinning this
and this
Bobbin included for scale.
Did I mention that I’m now planning to spin yarn for the ENTIRE SWEATER? I think it’s only fair, since Jen has to process her fleece before she can even start spinning. Love all the suggestions for the punishment, btw! SB suggested that the loser give the winner their stash, but I reminded him that I’ve only been knitting for 18 months and Jen’s bound to have a MUCH larger stash than I, so if he’s trying to get yarn out of the house, he’s going about it the wrong way.
Now for the White Stripes review. They were AWESOME!!! The venue sucked, quite honestly, and I won’t go back to Sloss unless it’s a must-not-miss show, like this one. I’d LOVE to tell you all about Jack’s hotness and sexy bod, but I really couldn’t see him very well. The music was great, they have taken the garage band sound and made it not only palpable, but enjoyable. There’s nothing like feeling the beat in your thyroid (or what I assumed to be my thyroid) to make you feel 17 again. They put on a great show and it’s amazing to me that two people can make so much noise. I liked the songs from the new album a lot, especially the one that could’ve been written by The Cars. I’d do it again, sweat and heat and crowds and all.
I have decided that when I am King of the World, all un-seated concerts will be governed by height. Those 5″ and under will be in the front, and people will be allowed in in increments of 2″. If a 5’4″ girl wants to stay with her 6’2″ boyfriend, she has to be with the 6’2″ group, he’s not allowed to come up to the 5’4″ group.
You guys could get behind that, right?

But then I’ll be in the very back..I’m 6′ tall! ;-) How cool you got to see the Stripes!
I’m not ready to spin yarn for a sweater…I’ve not followed through well on my shawl!

Wow, what a challenge! (I think I said that before.) I can’t wait to see what you come up with. Don’t feel TOO sorry for Jen, she commandeered her brother’s help with the picking of the VM. Before long she’ll have him sitting at the wheel and treadling while she leisurely drafts from the nearby easy chair… ;-)

Sounds like you’ve got quite the project lined up — the fiber is very pretty, it’ll look great!

Whoa – mega project on the horizon! Good for you – and did you say you have only been knitting for 18 months?!? Colour me impressed. :-)
Glad the concert was such a blast – they are totally awesome. I think your no-seat concert rules make sense (I’m 5’5) and I can’t wait to find out what other changes you will make when you are King of the World.

Have fun with that! I am dragging my sister the muggle to see Stephanie. She wants to see the area. We are staying at the Gaslight Inn. I will use personal leave and work on a day off.
