I drank the wine, then threw down the gauntlet

Yes, I know that blog title makes no sense and it should be “goblet,” but I like it and I’m keeping it.  Work with me here.

You know how all the cool kids who live much further to the north and east than yours truly go to that certain festival each year and they knit their special sweaters to wear and it’s so inspiring and kinda sickening only because I don’t get to go and participate in all their reindeer fun?

Well, Jen and I are creating our own fun this year.  I’m sure she’ll come up with a much better name for it because she’s witty like that, but for now I’m calling it the Not-A-SAFF-Sweater Challenge.

Here are our rules:

1.  We each have to knit a sweater for ourselves before SAFF.  October 26-28 – three months away.  I can do it!  I know I can!  Jen, I’m not so sure about.  She’s got a farm to take care of and from what I understand, that Bakka is a handful.  Unless she teaches her brother to spin…that’s all I’m saying…

2.  Not less than 30% of this sweater must be knit from handspun fiber that we spin with our very own little hands.  Okay yes, and our wheels.

3.  If we aren’t wearing our handknit, handspun sweater at SAFF, there will be CONSEQUENCES.

This is where you, dear reader, get to have a little fun.  YOU get to choose the consequences!  Keep in mind that neither of us is willing to get naked.  Oh, and I don’t eat meat.  Other than that, all bets are off.

I don’t know what Jen will be knitting, but I have something like this in mind, following Elizabeth Zimmerman’s percentage method for sizing.  Or maybe following the pattern in that link, now that I just noticed there’s a free pattern there!

Jen?   I’ve already started spinning.  Hopefully the colors I’m spinning will work with the vision that’s in my head which (as my sister says) is a scary place to be.

And since it’s Friday, here’s a little something that caught my eye when I walked up the steps yesterday afternoon.

Old and new, getting a little shade.

Have a great weekend, y’all!

    A sweater with 30% (minimum) handspun? Jeezopete…

    /runs to start spinning/

pretty sweater! What a challenge. I have given up deadline knitting – it takes out the joy for me. I am learning that the hard way on this last pair of sockpal socks. Ugh.

I’m not joining in on this one because I’m going to have a hard enough time coming up with Superman Underoos as it is, but I wish you both luck. Also, you may want to nix any head shaving.

When I think consequences, I don’t think mean things to do to you, but rather nice things you have to do for everyone else, like spinning us up some handspun yarn. This maybe because I have been fortunate enough to recieve E’s handspun before though. I’m thinking goodies bags for everyone! Or at the very least a drink when we all meet up ;)

Of course you started spinning already. I don’t even have anything spinnable yet. Oy, maybe I should consider doing the corriedale instead-at least it’s already roving.

Love the sunflowers. Good luck is all I have to say. OK, I can go to SAFF, or I can go see the Yarn Harlot. (no time off) Which should it be?

I already left this comment at Jen’s blog, but I’ll repeat it here. The loser must spin me 400+ yards of silk & merino DK, color left to the spinner’s discretion (but it can’t be black or dark anything; eyes too old for that).

There, problem solved. You can thank me later. ;-)

Heheh, I said this over at JenLa’s too – the loser has to wear an acrylic turtleneck sweater to SAFF!

This idea is a great goal for me – for SAFF 2008 maybe! I think I have only spun about 400yards ever on my wheel. And I am about to leave the country again, and Victoria is staying home.

SOund slike a great idea for a challenge. I’m wondering how much you will actually like wearing the sweater in NC around October. It has been really warm here at that time before. Granted, I live in Raleigh, well east of where SAFF will be held.

I like the idea of the loser wearing an acrylic turtleneck sweater.

Hee, Hee!!! I just LOVE a challenge (not that I can actually participate because my wheel is still in pieces in my basement and even if it were all together I couldn’t possibly knit a sweater before October)….BUT…..I would LOVE to add my 2 cents worth on the consequences…..let me put on my “evil consequences” hat and I’ll get back with you!!! LOL!!!!

Perhapas have the loser wear their partial sweater (over a t-shirt) for one entire day at SAFF….dangling needles and all!! LOL!!!! With a sign pinned to the back that states they lost the “SAFF Sweater Challenge to….” and name off the winner(s).
