I’m so excited!!!

This weekend, we’re headed here! Where we’ll stay in one of these:
And walk along trails like this
and like this
and hopefully see lots of these
and perhaps one or two of these (which have a whole new meaning for me now!)
These pictures were taken three years ago but (unlike myself) I’m sure the Lodge and the trail haven’t changed. Part of my excitement is due to the cooler temperatures we’ll enjoy (yesterday’s high was 63, low of 42) but mostly I’m beside myself with anticipation at being surrounded by nature! I love the moss and the trees and the smells – it’s like Christmas in July when you’re hiking amid Frasier and spruce firs! It smells so CLEAN and EARTHY and REAL.
First we’ll spend the obligatory night in Gatlinburg – NOT one of my favorite places by far but a necessary evil as the hike up LeConte will take most of the following day. This year, we could only get reservations for a Sunday night stay, so we’ll go to Gatlinburg tomorrow morning (yay! 4-5 hours of car knitting time!), take the boy to the Tennessee Aquarium, visit Baskin Robbins (Jamoca Almond Fudge, here I come!), and I just learned of a shop called Smoky Mountain Spinnery that is half a mile from our hotel so I get to make a fiber excursion!!! Souvenir yarn/fiber is the BEST! A good night’s sleep and we’ll hike up the mountain on Sunday, stay the night in our rustic cabin (no electricity, only a kerosene lamp for light), and hike down on Monday. Then more car knitting time! And home!
I can’t imagine a more perfect weekend. I hope you all have a fabulous weekend, no matter what’s on your agenda!

I thought be gorgeous weather this time of year with sunny days, but wintery nights. Be sure to take lots of pictures to share with us! Especially of the souvenior yarn ;)

Very cool! I think my brother hiked up there a few years ago. Lucky guy is up in Gatlinburg this week with his family, staying in a cabin. (Hey, they LIKE Gatlinburg.)
Have fun!

I seriously hope you were joking about the type of cabin. You’re crazy. The only way I would stay in a hut like that is if it were one of those magic kind that looked really um, “rustic” on the outside and then you opened the door and it was obnoxiously plush.
Love you – Have fun!!!!

Oh I cannot tell you how JEALOUS I am about that trip!! We love Gatlinburg and stayed at the Dudley Creek Campground every spring break when I was growing up. We spent our days hiking and the evenings walking up and down the main street in Gatlinburg shopping for souvenirs and getting candy at the Candy Kitchen. Oh memories. :)
One thing I always wanted to do was hike to the lodge at Mt. Leconte but it was always mom and dad with us four kids and they didn’t quite want to do that. One of these days I hope I can. In the mean time I can’t wait to see more pictures of the trip! Thanks for sharing!! xoxox
