a scary and exciting (ad)venture

Yesterday I did what all good knitters do when they’re in a slump – I went shopping! My logic went something like this: I need a new project to jumpstart the mojo. I have nine skeins of Rowan Summer Tweed in my stash, but no pattern. Call LYS#1 that’s closest to work – they don’t have the pattern for Chamomile. Call LYS#2 – they are out of the pattern books but I can photocopy the pattern from their shop copy. Great! Hop in the car, walk into In the Making and am thumbing through the pattern book (just to be SURE, you know) and Donna, the owner, comes up to me and says, “There’s no way to contact you on your website!”
I’ll back up a little. When Blogless Ginny and I went to In the Making’s grand reopening sale, not only did I score lots of great bargains, but Donna and I had a lengthy conversation about my selling handdyed, handspun yarn in her shop. I left promising I’d go through my handspun stash, bring in some samples so she could see what I’ve done, and we’d talk more. I also gave her my website url. And that’s pretty much all I did. I’ve been THINKING a lot since then about whether or not I wanted to sell my handspun (something I’ve considered before) but it takes me so long to actually make the yarn that I didn’t see how I could make it profitable and besides, I’m more than a little attached to my yarn at the moment. Go ahead and laugh, you have the same problem.
Fast forward to yesterday. The long and short of it is – I came home with this:
1,800 grams of dyeable wool. 7,650 yards. Wow! WOW!!! I’m nervous and excited and scared to death (what if I screw it up?!?!?) and really pumped (what if I DON’T screw it up and it turns out fabulously and I have a booming business in handdyed yarn and then I can expand and rent a little dye studio with lots of flowers out front and I’ll play MY MUSIC – you know, the stuff that SB doesn’t really care to listen to, like Alanis and Tori and Cyndi Lauper – and quit my day job and play with fiber all day long!). I am constantly going back and forth between the two emotions. Donna is super sweet and we had a great conversation about particular colorways we have in mind and we’re definitely on the same wavelength. I don’t want to say too much about what we have planned, but I think they’ll turn out really nicely and I have a lot of ideas rolling around.
Now you know what I’ll be doing this weekend! Squee!
Oh! I did buy some yarn while I was there! Have you guys seen this yarn?
It’s sock yarn from Shi Bui Knits in Honey and Mulberry, 100% superwash merino, 191 yards in a 50 gr. skein. These folks are going to give Koigu a run for their money, if they’re not already. The colors are fabulous and the yarn itself is identical to Koigu. Check it:
Can you see a difference? I can’t. I bought Honey to mate with this Koigu I was knitting anklets out of, but really wanting a full pair of socks instead. Now that I see it paired with Mulberry up there, I’m rethinking that plan. Wouldn’t they make a great pair of knee socks? Of course, I’d need to buy more, but that’s just a small impediment, isn’t it? Nothing that can’t be overcome. I also bought a pair of Addi lace needles.
But I won’t be knitting anything for awhile. I have a bit of dyeing to do. *gulp*

Congratulations! It sounds like a fun adventure.
I went through a phase of spinning when I wanted to try all kinds of fiber and techniques. I didn’t worry about what I would do with the yarn or if it was my style. I just wanted to play. What did I do with it all? I sold it (maybe not ALL of it). It gave me tremendous freedom and I learn a lot.
Go for it! There is nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Can I put in the first bid to be apprentice/assistant in your fiber studio?
I’ll bring fresh flowers every day :)

Cannot wait to see the colourways you dye up. And who can blame you for getting attached to the yarn!

It’s kismet. When I saw the photo in yesterday’s post of that blue and many other colors yarn you spun, I strongly considered e-mailing you and asking to buy it. So, let me know when your yarns are available in the commercial sector!
