Yarn takes less room than fiber, right?

After my recent assessment, I decided it was time to finish my oldest (like – started back in November) spinning project – Border Leicester/Romney mix I got from Pia, the shepherdess in my guild.
This is a three ply of three different colors of the same breed of sheep. There’s one strand that’s dark chocolate brown, one that’s medium brown and one that’s slightly heathered gray. It’s not as exciting as spinning bright, cheery colors, but this wool is so soft and such a joy to spin (it still has some lanolin in it!) that it practically spins itself! I already had one bobbin spun, so yesterday while I was home fighting a sinus infection, I spun two 4 oz. bobbins and plied it all in a little over three hours.
I have the beginnings of a plan as to what to do with it, but that will depend on whether I can get more from Pia. Oh, okay, I’ll tell you what I’m thinking. I’d like to make a jacket with this, as it’s soft but not next-to-the-skin soft. I’d like something along the lines of Samus, but I’d carry the cable design up the front, skip the zipper entirely, and maybe do a little stand-up mandarin collar that has a small cable design on it. The cables would be worked in the above yarn, the rest of the sweater in a combination of the two browns. Once I spin enough of the browns to knit a swatch, I’ll have a better idea whether this will work.
I’ve also been knitting squares for Greensburg.
This is so much fun! It took me a few tries to figure out the correct number to knit to get an 8″ square, so I had to crochet a border on two of the squares to make them 8″, but now that I have the number, it’s easy going! I knit one whole square just running errands on Saturday, and two while watching judge shows and recuperating on the couch! I definitely see a knitted afghan in my future. The smallness of the project and options for making each square different is really addictive!
Now for the self-indulgence portion of today’s post. Recently, Kat was interviewed and offered to interview others. Knowing that Kat would come up with some really good questions (because she’s an insightful type of person), I volunteered. She sent several questions with instructions to answer at least five. So here they are:
1. What’s the thing you’re proudest of in your life? Ditto, knitting? I guess I’m proudest of the fact that I’m not a quitter. There have been times when it would’ve been easier (in the short run) to give up and resign myself to a life less than what I wanted or deserved and I’m proud that I didn’t go the easy route. As for knitting, I’m willing to try anything. As my friend Liz says, it’s only kinky the first time. I can’t think of one technique that’s ever made me say “there’s no way I’ll do that.”
2. What’s the worst job you’ve ever had? The best? What made them that way? I used to sell shoes. That could be a pretty nasty job inandof itself, but I also worked for a tyrant. Right after I moved to Alabama, I started working at a local shoe store (now national). I worked there for two years while my daughter was in pre-school and kindergarten. I worked 60 hours a week for three weeks, then worked every fourth Sunday for probably 70 hours that week. It was the worst job, but it was also the best job. I learned responsibility. I learned the true meaning of customer service. I learned to overcome my shyness and how to talk to people. I learned that life is too short to work for people who yell at you. I also learned not to burn bridges, as I later worked there part-time to buy school clothes for my daughter and if I’d told the boss what I really thought of him when I left, I wouldn’t have had that opportunity.
3. What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home? What were the circumstances that led you there? Would you ever go back? Birmingham, Alabama to Paris, France = 4,486 miles. I took my daughter to London and Paris as a graduation present. I’ve been back twice, once with Blogless Ginny and most recently on my honeymoon. I’d go back tomorrow!
4. Have you ever met anyone famous? Describe the encounter in extruciating detail. Well, last summer SB and I met Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. We hung out after the concert to say hello and get a picture for the blog. We pretty much made total fools out of ourselves. First, Gillian Welch had no idea what a “knit blog” was. Then, while I was busy telling Dave Rawlings that we almost hadn’t come to the show because we had a lot of family stuff we’d been dealing with and couldn’t decide whether to stay in and watch t.v. or go out, SB was asking Gillian Welch if she had a cd coming out anytime soon. She said no and he replied, “well, that’s better than releasing a bunch of crap!” (or something along those lines). Can you believe we said such asinine things?!?!? In our defense, we were in total decompress mode, having just returned from SB’s grandmother’s funeral THAT DAY and had maybe had a few too many cocktails, so we take no responsibility for anything we said.
5. If you are feeing edgy/grumpy/depressed/unhappy, what do you do to make yourself feel better? If I’m edgy, I’ll clean house (especially if I’m angry). Grumpy, I’ll knit or spin until the meditative movements make me feel better. Depressed and unhappy – listen to music or talk to a friend on the phone, unless I really want to wallow in it and then I’ll watch a sad movie. Sometimes a girl just needs a good cry, ya know?
If you’d like ME to interview YOU, just leave a comment and I’ll do my best to come up with unique questions! Thanks, Kat, for such great questions!

The yarn looks fabulous and your idea for a jacket sounds so pretty! I’m not sure if I should let you interview me or not. ;-)

Oh yes, me please (seeing as I didn’t get to answer your tag!)
That is some gorgeous yarn, and your idea sounds like it would be beautiful :) I hope you feel better soon – sinus infections are nasty!

The yarn is pretty, and I like the sounds of your jacket idea.

Sorry to hear about the sinus infection. So painfull. Hope you feel better soon. I think the jacket sounds great…you might consider a contrasting color or blending the yarn with something not so itchy if you go with a manderin collar (which sound way cool). Itchy under my chin would drive me insane.
I love that Blogless Ginny is known as Blogless Ginny. I think we should start a raucously fictious one for her.

Hello!
Thanks for the supportive comments at my blog – I really appreciate them.
I am rushing – on my lunch break – so I will come back and read more of yours later.
Congrats on your Boot Camp success!!

Blogless Ginny has a sinus infection, too. And an ear infection. Got to kick these before I have to fly in 10 days. Hmmm, I may have to start a fictitious blog as a creative writing exercise. Thanks for the idea, Stacey!
