There I go again

making more yarn I don’t have time to knit!

CIMG2928-1.JPG

I can’t help it!  I love, love, love it!  It’s soft!  It’s squishy!  It’s balanced even though I put a lot of twist in the singles and a decent amount of twist in the ply!  It’s girly colors!  It’s….only 175 yards.  Hmph.  But wait.  People have been known to knit a pair of anklets out of one skein of Koigu, which is 175 yards, and this yarn is thicker than Koigu.  So, yes, it can be socks, but on the short side.

Wool anklets in yarn thicker than Koigu.  Might not be a great idea for Alabama.  Hey!  What if I paired it with this?!?!

This is some mills ends I dyed back in January that I never blogged about.  Not that I don’t like it – I do – just that it made its way to the handspun stash without being “featured.”  I commented to Rachel yesterday that I have quite a few 200-300 yard skeins of handdyed handspun lying around and the colors work well in a coordinating or contrasting way.  I was thinking that eventually I’d hop on the ripple wagon, but I think these two colors would make a nice pair of striped knee highs for our temperate winters here in the South (meaning, I’ll have to crank the A/C in January to be able to wear them).  I can handle that.

Rachel is also thinking of selling her handdyed fiber and/or handspun yarn, and I laughed when I read her post because I’ve been thinking (for quite awhile, actually) along the same lines.  I believe I’d be more likely to sell handpainted fiber, though, because I get attached to my yarn.  Even if I don’t knit it.  I WILL!!!  Eventually!  Plus, you know that thing where as you get older, you start to realize things about yourself?  I’ve realized that I am thin skinned.  I don’t like to be wrong and criticism makes me defensive (whether it’s deserved or not, my gut reaction is still “NO!”) and selling handspun yarn, well, for one thing, it’s labor intensive to make and of course it won’t be perfect because it’s made by hand and not a machine, but…when you choose to SELL it, you open yourself up to criticism and the potential of unhappy customers and that would just kill me.  I also want spinning to remain FUN and not WORK.  I’m much more likely to gift handspun than sell it.  But roving…that’s different.  I need to do some talking to our local LYS’s and see what, if anything, could be worked out.  Or maybe go with Etsy.  I don’t know.  What do you think?

I made it through the first week of Boot Camp!  It was so nice to sleep in this morning!  We won’t weigh or measure until next week (yes, I will post my results - good, bad or ugly), and I’m responsible for doing one hour of cardio and ab work today and tomorrow, so I brought my gym bag and am hitting the eliptical climber at lunch.  I haven’t been hungry AT ALL with this healthy eating plan, although I have missed having a glass of wine or an imported beer.  I’m not swearing alcohol off forever, but all things in moderation.  I swear my pants feel looser, but it may just be that I’m more aware of my body since I’ve actually been using it!  I created a FREE account with Fit Day, which is an easy way to track food intake, particularly if you eat the same foods regularly.  I’m also finding a lot of recipes at Vegetarian Times, and they list the nutritional information for every recipe, which is something Epicurious (my former favorite site for recipes) doesn’t do.

I hope everyone has a FABULOUS weekend!  We’re going camping!  Here’s more yarny goodness!

Oh my goodness! That yarn, those colors–gorgeous! I think that, when paired with the solid yarn, you’ll have one fabulous pair of knee socks. I think I like the idea of using two different colors for socks even more than the afghan idea. *sigh* If only there were more knitting time in the day…

I think it’s funny that we’re both considering selling our creations. My husband actually is the one that encouraged me to look into it, since I love dyeing so much, but there is no way I could ever use all that yarn or fiber. If you do decide to sell your yarn and fiber, I wish you the best of luck. I’m not sure how I’m going to do it yet, or how well it will actually sell, but I’m excited at the prospect!

Look at how pretty those colors are. I *never* get tired of seeing handspun close-ups.

As for selling stuff – why not try Etsy then expand into the LYSs? There’d be a wider audience via Etsy to test the waters with.

I’m with Beth – I never get tired of seeing upclose macros of the handspun yarn. SO BEAUTIFUL! Every little fiber – some different colors – no yarn is the same when it’s handspun. I love that.

And about selling – I’m right there with you about the handspun yarn. It’s too close to my heart to bear criticism about the yarn itself. I’ll gift it in a heartbeat but sell it – NO. At least, not right now. Maybe if I had a spinning wheel. Maybe.

Keeping posting all the wonderfully colorful yarn you are dyeing! The colors today are sooo cheerful. It makes me happy to read how happy it makes you to spin it!

The picture on the bottom makes the yarn look like Indian corn. :) Have fun camping – wish I could go camping [pouts]. :)

Enjoy your weekend of camping! THe yarn is fabulously fun! It takes so long to spin a skein, even a small skein and that would stop me from selling it. I’d rather give to some one I really like and know that they will enjoy it. Good luck if you decide to do some selling of yarn and fiber.

Your yarn is fabulous! I’m like you, thin skinned. I had an Etsy shop for a while, but I’m no business woman. I’d like to give spinning a try, have already ordered a starter kit, can’t wait to get it. Have a nice weekend yourself! ;o)

That’s beautiful. Your spinning has come a long way in a short time. I’ve still been mulling over the idea of a booth at SAFF, but I can’t seem to get any time to actually create something to sell there. I’ve been pondering the idea of a knit bloggers’ co-op type of booth where a bunch of us bring stuff, but I’m afraid we’d end up out in the cold, cold barns. Hmmmmm…..
