Rosalita, jump a little higher

senorita come sit by my fire, I just want to be your lover, ain’t no liar, Rosalita you’re my stone desire

***

Last night, I didn’t do anything but spin, spin, spin.  Well, okay, I did make dinner for the mancub and eat a falafel sandwich with SB, but other than that, I spun.  I am loving this batt from Abby so much that I am spinning it really slowly.  I’m going to be sad when it’s done.

I even got up early this morning to spin.  Usually when SB’s in the shower, I snooze for another 15-20 minutes.  This morning, I was up and at the wheel.  Who, I think, deserves a name.  Since she’s a Majacraft Rose, I started thinking along those lines …Rose … Rosie … nah, been done too much.  The only name I could think of was Delta Dawn, from the Helen Reddy song ”what’s that flower you have on? could it be a faded rose from days gone by?”  Delta Dawn’s kinda depressing and too long to say (definitely too long to type) and plus, I’d have that song stuck in my head all the time.  Now, I love me some Helen Reddy, don’t get me wrong, “I Am Woman” is like, the best fight song ever and MUST be belted from the top of one’s lungs.  My mom had Helen Reddy’s Greatest Hits on vinyl and even though we were forbidden to play it because we needed a new needle, my sister and I played it anyway and I loved every song.  But some more than others.  Delta Dawn was among the few that I was eh about.  (Not so “You and Me Against the World.”  I can SO whip up some tears listening to that song!)

ANYWAY.  As I was typing this post, the name “Rosalita” came to mind.  And I thought, ‘doesn’t Bruce have a song about Rosalita?’  Sure enough, he does!  And it’s not depressing!  Hooray!  My wheel has a name!

Morning is the best time to spin.  There aren’t any distractions or noises, just the quiet hum of the wheel.  I’m getting more in tune with the rythym of spinning; this morning I kept hearing a scritch, scritch sound, so I stopped and sure enough, the yarn had come out of the yarn guide.  I really did not want to stop when it was time to get ready for work.  I didn’t take any pictures because it looks the same as last week, just more of it.  I’ve realized that my idea of spinning three bobbins full and trying to match up the stripes would likely end in a muddied mess, so I’m going against my own advice and making chained singles to keep the colors separate so they’ll stripe…purple…red…gold…repeat.  The stripes won’t all be uniform in length, but I’m fine with that.  I’m going to practice navajo plying/chained singles on some “regular” yarn I’ve spun first, so I can familiarize myself with the movements again and have less of a learning curve when I ply the good stuff.

Since I have no pictures of my own productivity, check out these FABULOUS crochet critters amigurumi my sister made!!!

Yes, amigurumi crochet blog, please. That middle one is seriously cracking me up.
Thank god you didn’t do Delta Dawn. I never heard the original, just the version Monica sang on Friends in the karaoke episode, and now I have both the song and the image stuck in my head. I wanna go wash my brain out with soap.

I do recommend practicing with yarn or other spinning first. It’s all about rhythm and find how much drag you need on your Lazy Kate, too. Maybe I’ll try and show how I do chained singles later this week. Your spinning is beautiful and will make fabulous socks. Cute critters;-)

Those are some very cute critters!

Since you “ear wormed” me with that song now, in your honour I’ll head back to the workshop and get back to MORE BATTS, listening to Springsteen. ;-)

(an ear worm, in case you don’t know, is another term for a song virus, when a song gets stuck in your head based on just the suggestion of it)

As an aside, I’m liking the shift I’m starting to see, where people are saying “chained singles” instead of “navajo plying.” For various reasons, I prefer the term “chained singles.”

“…when I ply the good stuff.”

The good stuff — so much of what makes life fun is getting to the good stuff, isn’t it? Yarn, wine, books, whatever. The good stuff. I like thinking about that.

Yes! Get that girl a blog! If nothing else, you can use it to keep up with each other!

Rosalita is a much better name than Delta Dawn.

I almost stuck a crochet in my eye after several attempts to make a simple (insert hysterical laughter here) granny square today. Dearest husband claims to have downloaded blog software for me, so that should be coming in about a year or so. Thanks for all of your comments on the ami’s!!! Carrie, that one in the middle was the first one I made, and I admit it is pretty funny looking! So much so that one of my clients said the feet look like balls. And I don’t mean the ones you play on a field with. Or maybe. Ew.
