lunchtime

This is what I worked on at lunchtime today.

I didn’t do all this at lunch, I cast on (for the third time) this morning.  In case you missed it in yesterday’s post, I’m knitting the Rambling Rose Cardigan from the Winter IK.  I’m making the largest size, for a 43″ chest, because the pattern is written in two sizes – 30″ and 43″.  Since it’s not meant to be a shrug, I’m making the larger size.

The yarn is Debbie Bliss Cotton DK that was gifted to me by Kristin awhile back.  Although the yarn was a gift, the person I must thank for the inspiration is Leigh.  Look at her January 10th entry and be prepared to drool.  Her cardigan is lovely and honestly, I would never have considered making this in the two-color version.  In my opinion, the two colors detract from the beauty of the design.  I emailed Leigh last week and asked her thoughts on substituting DB Cotton for the called-for yarn (Koigu Kersti) and she sent back a very thoughtful and encouraging reply.  Thanks, Leigh!  My hope is that the structure of the garment will prevent the cotton yarn from stretching all the way to Georgia and back.

I’ve already learned a thing or two.  First I learned that casting on 99 stitches three times was like listening to 99 bottles of beer on the wall and never getting past the first verse.  Next I learned that when you copy and enlarge a two-color chart, it’s a good idea to make an X in the boxes indicating NO stitches, or you might just think the slight shading is a color reference and knit where there should be no stitches, which results in an entire row of un-knitting.

I have a strong suspicion I’ll learn a lot more before this cardigan is through.

Wow! I didn’t really “get” Rambling Rose when I saw it in IK — the two-color thing just turned me off — but it is beautiful in a solid, and I love the color you are using!
