New LYS, new project

Saturday, SB and I drove to Montevallo.  He needed to do some work on his mom’s roof and I took the opportunity to stop into Sheep to Shawl, a new knitting and spinning shop.  The owner, Rae Jean, was super nice and happy to see another spinner!  I bought merino/silk roving and some Wensleydale (“Cheese, Gromit!!!”).  No pictures because it’s just fluff.  The shop was interesting, she has a lot of yarn that isn’t your typical LYS fare (i.e., Debbie Bliss, Noro, etc. Not that I don’t like those yarns, but I was glad to see some independents represented).  I was pleased and surprised that she gave me a jar of dye just to try out and let her know what I thought about it – now THAT’S customer service!

Monday afternoon and yesterday was spent tending the sick boy (he’s fully recovered but ran a 102 temperature all day Monday so I’m on the lookout for symptoms.  Is it an old wives tale that you’re contagious when running a fever?  I was NOT happy that his dad neglected to tell me about the fever and possibly infected another household with this plague.  So inconsiderate!  Ahem.), so my big plans of dyeing and spinning weren’t realized, but I did manage to finish the first half of my pinwheel cushion.  Now I need to dye and spin the yarn for the second half.

Finishing this should have inspired me to tackle the gusset and heel of my toe-up socks, but…I’m still a bit nervous about screwing that up and rather than deal with it directly, I declared Swatch Day.  Pulled out the Treasuries and swatched three or four different combinations with various yarns.  I finally settled on this:

What?  You can’t tell what stitch pattern it is?  Okay, okay!

It’s the plaited diagonal stripe stitch, worked in two navajo-plied yarns (that I made – yay!).  Originally it was going to be a scarf, but after knitting a 5″x9″ swatch, weighing the remaining yarn and figuring out that the finished scarf would only be 45″ long (at best), I frogged and cast on again for a springtime bag.  The plan is to have two 10×12 (approx.) pieces and use a solid yarn for the sides and bottom of the bag.  The stitch is firm and dense and I hope will hold up well.

When I got to work today, I found this waiting on me!

6 lbs. of mills ends that the post office finally located and decided to deliver to me (ordered 12/28)!  Carol Lee was awesome in helping track this down, I think we’d both given it up for lost.

Speaking of LOST – 2 more weeks!  Woot!

Lastly, my friend Janet e-mail tagged me for the weird things meme.  As I read other people’s responses to this meme, I’ve considered things about myself that might be weird and I either came up with a bazillion items or just a few.  So instead of listing them here, I’m adding a new page called “A Few Things” that I’ll add to as they occur to me.  My version of a “100 Things” list but without the pressure.  It can serve as my eulogy – not that I plan to need one any time soon – but if this stomach virus hits me as hard as it did Drew, it might be nice to have on hand.

I have tried to find a phone number for this yarn shop but there is no listing. Do you by any chance have a phone number of how I may reach them?
