spinning my wheels, going nowhere

I have been diligently spinning this BFL dyed by Adrian.
Sorry for the crappy picture. Believe me when I say it is gorgeous shades of yellow, orange, brown and black.
I started spinning this Saturday (I think). Worked on it all last weekend and every night this week. I don’t know why I was in such an all-fire hurry (what the heck does that saying mean, anyway?), but I really, really wanted to have this done and plied before going to Indiana this weekend. It’s not like I’m going to cast on immediately – I have things on the needles that must be finished first. The thought even popped into my head that I don’t like leaving things unfinished but the sheer absurdity of that statement made me laugh out loud. I just wanted to see what it would look like, I suppose. Impatience as a motive is much more in keeping with my m.o.
I finally finished spinning last night and immediately slapped on my jumblo plyer (yay! Christmas presents!) and started plying. I plied for over an hour last night, another hour this morning, and I’m still not finished.
I knew I wanted to make socks with this, so I used the fastest whorl on my Rose and drafted thinly. I also knew I wanted this to be two-ply and that there would be some color overlapping, but I didn’t realize it’d be so tweedy. Good thing I like tweed!

Thank you for your comments on yesterday’s post. To quickly respond – yes, twisted stitches can be produced by knitting through the back loops instead of the front legs. And, like Karrie, I SO should have realized what I was doing LAST YEAR when I made a lace scarf and it took three tries before I realized my YOs weren’t producing holes. I fixed my YOs but not the knit stiches. Sheesh! Tania asked if I knit continental, and I do, which I think is a throwback to my croshayin’ days (hook in one hand, yarn in the other). Maybe that’s why I wrapped the yarn clockwise, I don’t know. Maybe I’m just a dufus. Anyway, *thanks* for all your kind comments! I don’t feel so badly now. Oh – Emily – what’s the “galloping horse” rule???

I think it refers to not being able to be seen from a galloping horse. Also heard “passing carriage” and “running horse” – basically ain’t nobody gonna notice unless it’s right under their nose! Or if you point it out to them!

Yep – the galloping horse rule has been my friend for lo these many years – basically, as a rule of thumb if there’s an error that no one would ever notice as you were going by on a galloping horse it’s OK. Perfect for the non-perfectionists out there like me. Of course most of my mistakes are actually design elements.
Lordamercy girl – that pillow came out beeyooteeful! I like that you alternated there for a bit as well, really tied everything together.
And your dyeing? Wow… Maybe we should swap sometime? I’ll trade you some of my handdyed fiber for some of yours?
Good job!

Once again you prove to me that I am a color snob. I love that about you. How it looks as fiber will be different as yarn just as yarn looks different once it’s a garment.
Your yarn looks gorgeous. Can’t wait to see it as socks.

oh, don’t give me any credit for noticing… It took me some time to consider that I was doing something wrong. For a while I just thought that yarn-overs were a scam.
and now i have wheel envy. I have to pedal like a madwoman on the lendrum to make sock yarn. Even with the fast flyer. Yours looks fantastic!
