Travel tips

I was just reading Pixie’s blog about her preparations for her trip to London and Paris.  Of course I felt the need to offer her a few of my own tried-and-true travel tips, but I really have more than I can in good conscience put in her comments, so I thought I’d post them here.  In case anyone is traveling any time soon.

PRACTICAL TIPS

1.  Pack and dress in layers.  Camisoles, lightweight button-up or pullover shirts, sweaters.  You can take off a layer while in a stuffy museum and put it back on when you leave.

2.  Pack less than you think you’ll need.  You’ll need room in your suitcase for purchases and the airlines are getting serious about weight restrictions (thankfully, they let us bring back those 9 bottles of French wine because we’d bought the tickets before the new regulations were in place but you may not be so lucky).

3.  Bring a small can of Febreeze to freshen clothing you’ll wear more than once (black pants, etc.).

4.  Don’t try to cram too much into your agenda.  The best part about travelling is experiencing your surroundings and that comes as much from walking down the street as doing/going/seeing.  Sometimes just being is what you remember most.

And now for the tips my friend Ginny and I wrote while we were in Paris.

GINNY & ELIZABETH’S RULES OF TRAVEL

1.  Whenever you have the chance, use the bathroom!

2.  If anyone says anything you don’t understand, it’s a compliment!

3.  If you’re separated, wait at the next Metro stop.

4.  Metro doors are not like elevator doors (Ginny nearly lost an arm, if it weren’t for a quick-thinking Frenchman, she would’ve died on the Boulogne Pont de St-Cloud line.  Not a bad place to go, but still…).

5.  Always drink with lunch (wine greatly enhances one’s appreciation of fine art) (and pretty much anything else).

6.  Rest for at least one hour before going out to dinner.

And the most important rule of all:

7.  View all hassles, changes and unexpected happenings as ADVENTURES!!!!!!

And please, if you do travel to far away and exciting places (or hell, even if you’re going down the road), share your experiences with me.  I love to live vicariously!

Great advice! And with regards to #2 of the Practical Tips, I always say “They have clothes in [insert whatever country I'm going to]!” At least that’s usually the case. I went to Russia in high school and they told us to bring tampons/pads because they didn’t have them where we were going. :/

I’m going to the NC beach for the holidays, that’s not very exotic though.
