Birthday goodies

Yesterday was such a great day.  It was like an early Christmas!  I guess that’s what you get when your birthday is in December.

I asked my mother for a gift certificate from Hello Yarn, which she graciously provided, and I placed my order last week.  Yesterday, I received my package!

That’s 1 lb. South African fine wool top, 4 oz. superwash merino and 4 oz. BFL.  I can’t recall the colors of the dyed roving, but I was so impressed with the brightness and intensity, I HAD to spin some.  Just a little.  While we watched a couple episodes of Lost.  Resistance was futile.

I’m trying to spin this very thinly so I can navajo ply it.  Thanks to these fantastic videos, I navajo-plied this pink/purply yarn as my one fiber-indulgence over the course of my vacation last week (the rest of the time was spent cleaning and shopping and de-cluttering the house) (no fun, but badly needed).

I wanted to preserve the stripes, and I was eager to try navajo plying after reading Teresa’s tutorial about the changing characteristics of yarns depending on their plies, and how that affects the suitability of a single, two-ply, three or four ply yarn for specific projects.  This three ply is springy and well-rounded…which seems really obvious when you think about it but until I read the tutorial, I hadn’t really thought about it.

I also bought myself a present with birthday money from my wonderful MIL:

That’s an 18 quart turkey roaster.  “What on earth would a vegetarian need a turkey roaster for?” you may ask.  Why, to dye fiber, of course!  KMart has them on sale this week for $30, I figure I can easily dye 2-3 lbs. of fiber at one time, and you can set the temperature so you don’t overcook your fiber!  I’m pumped!  I plan to dye all day Saturday while Sgt. Britty’s at the annual Men’s Brunch (chili cooking and eating, beer and whiskey drinking, potato-cannon-blasting, no women allowed throw-down).

But I only get to indulge if I’m done decorating, wrapping and baking.

Spider Monkey says: Forget the tree!  Let’s dye some fiber!

That’s really pretty yarn, from lovely fiber. Wonder if the emu has any fiber-it really looks shaggy. Cute monkey!

woo hoo thanks for the tip about the turkey roaster – I have been meaning to pick one up for dyeing in the winter down here in the desert. In summer, I just set my dye packets in the sun for a couple of hours and that works fine.

Gorgeous fiber and spinning all the way ’round. I’m jealous, but in a nice way…
