I said I wasn’t going to do any Christmas knitting, other than finishing two projects I’ve already started. But…I think my sister would really like a pair of Fetching mitts, I have the yarn in my stash and they’re such a quick and satisfying knit that well, I’m over halfway done!
Last week I was lamenting about what to do with 120 yards of dyed handspun in a colorway I could maybe repeat in the year 2078 IF I got lucky, and Jen suggested that I knit a moebius. I looked for patterns, but everything required much more yardage than I had, so I thought, ‘I don’t need no stinkin pattern.’ (you see where this is going?) I also thought, ‘I don’t need no stinkin gauge swatch.’ I cast on 110 stitches, joined in the round being careful to TWIST the stitches for a change, and made this:
It will soon be frogged. Starting the pattern on the second row was a bad idea – it curls horribly. Also, 110 stitches is way too much, it hangs down like a saggy necklace and not the soft cowl I envisioned. The colors are perfect for my winter coat, though, so I will definitely be re-knitting this very soon, perhaps with this pattern (scroll down). But I doubt that I’ll do a gauge swatch. I have to have a little danger in my life, ya know.
I don’t know if any of you read Maryse’s blog, but some time ago she issued a dye challenge, and I took her up on it. In my usual fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants manner, I dyed up some roving for her, sent it off, did not take any notes about amounts of dye and water used, and then tried to recreate it. The colors I got were much more muted, but I spun them up and hoped they would create stripes. I thought if I split the roving in equal parts and spun them in the same sequence, the colors would line up and voila! I’d have striped yarn. Ha. No, I didn’t weigh the roving before and after I split it, I used the scientific Eyeball Method. Guaranteed to fail, every time. But – I *heart* this yarn more than any I’ve ever made! I think Mack the Cat likes it too.
And the close up
God, I love this yarn. Love it! It’s a bit over-plied and I’ll probably have to weight the skein when I set the twist, but I don’t care. 190 yards, Brown Sheep mills ends. I think I’ll make a hat and use what’s leftover for mitten cuffs or something.

Gorgeous spinning, girl. And the gloves look fetching – I made a pair for a friend for Xmas. They go really fast. I was able to get a pair out of 110 yards. Good luck with the redesign of the cowl.

Oops, sorry that my suggestion has caused you unecessary hell. It’s BEAUTIFUL yarn, though.
