Getting through this weekend

Tomorrow morning in the wee hours, the ManCub and I will be driving to Indiana for the long holiday weekend. While I’m very excited about seeing my family, I know this is going to be a hard trip. For one thing, Sgt. Britty won’t be with me due to a crisis in his family, and that means my main support beam will be gone. I won’t go into all the past transgressions, but simply put – my mom married a horrible man who we’ve all tried to deal with, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, over the past 12 years. I have no illusions that this visit will be different from any other – and some have been very, very bad.
So when I saw the title ”Pass the Drumstick, and an Olive Branch,” in today’s NYT, I thought ‘hell yeah’ and gave it a read. This article has some great tips – things we all know but maybe don’t always put into practice. I’m going to do my best to keep these tips close at hand over the weekend, and I thought I’d share some with you in case you need them too.
“If someone says something that seems designed to anger people, acknowledge the guest’s opinion, then make a joke about it and ease the conversation in another direction.”
(I can’t rely on my mom to do this, but I certainly am capable of saying, “I really feel this discussion is going nowhere” and changing the subject.)
“Make a plan for how you are going to handle uncomfortable situations. Give yourself permission to leave the room or to leave dinner early — as long as you prepare a thoughtful, polite excuse.”
(Too bad I quit smoking!)
“The meaning of manners is really about being kind to people, about being nice”
“The whole point is to make people feel comfortable, but to do what makes sense,” she said. “Etiquette is about applying consideration and respect and common sense.”
Okay, Mrs. Post. I’m going to practice kindness, consideration, respect and common sense till my teeth hurt. Then I’ll go take a nap.

Good luck with that. A brisk walk in the cold air — far away from the irritant — can renew your spirits. Just don’t start smoking again; if you do, he’s won.
