I’ve been using my new spindle quite a bit since returning from SAFF.

L to R: 30ish yards of reddish pink singles leftover from My Horrible Dye Job (see below); Emerald City (approx. 60 yards of singles); 1 oz. of tussah silk that produced 60 yards of two-ply (!); brown-tweedish yarn from this roving, with dark but still discernible colors, I was surprised how this spun up – 60 yards of two-ply; and lastly, my attempt at salvaging this:

Ug-glee, eh?  Thanks to the magic of Holly‘s handcards, I blended this mess with some white wool/mohair (also courtesy of Holly), and created something at least passable, if rather patriotic.  Not that I’m not patriotic, I’m just not a red, white & blue wearing sort of gal.

I absolutely have GOT to get a wheel.  I love my new spindle, I love being able to spin fine yarn that doesn’t turn into nautical rope when you ply it, but sixty yards – people, that’s not enough!

This is for Deb:

And here’s how the conversation went this morning:

SB:   Are you taking a picture of our calendar?

ME:  Yes.  It’s for Deb.

SB:  …

ME:  She wants everyone to show pictures of the November page of their calendars.

SB:  …

ME:  That’s how it is in blogland.  You do what everyone else is doing.  But you also have to be original and unique at the same time.

SB:  Oh, like the new Bob Seger cd!

ME:  Exactly.

I love the conversation–trying to explain this kind of thing to “outsiders” just never goes well, does it? And how funny that we have the same calendar!

Your spindle-spun yarn looks great . . . but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I think that a wheel is the way to go, huh?

Your yarns look lovely. I need to get another spindle. One to keep at my place and one to keep at Barron’s. That way, when I accidentally leave my stuff at his place, I’ll have a way to spin at home. D’oh. Oh well.

Hey the e-mail nazi’s kicked my e-mail back. In answer to your question:
I used the knitty tutorial by Wendy and did the figure-eight cast on. So far so good, but it took me a couple of tries to get it down. I think after I give this a try and see how I like it, next will be toe up socks on two circs should I like the toe up better. We’ll see when I get to the hell how I feel about this. Does anyone do a flap heel toe up? Or is it short rows all the way? I prefer flap to short row because I always have one side of the heel that’s a little holey.

Don’t think of it as patriotic, think of it as bastille-day yarn. Just don’t mention it to your neighbors. Heh. Nice work on the handspun and yes, you do need a wheel. You’ll never give up your spindles, but the wheel will make a big difference. Have you decided what model yet?
