SAFF – I should’ve taken more pictures

I blame it on the fumes.  It had to be the fumes, right?  Because I normally take LOTS of pictures!  The whole experience was rather overwhelming – one’s first fiber festival can be.  Because of the nasty weather, we re-thought our plans to camp out and stayed in a hotel Friday night.  Smart decision, as it rained all.day.long.  No pictures, but the drive into Asheville was gorgeous.  Some of the prettiest trees and fall colors I’ve ever seen.  I definitely want to go back and do lots of hiking in the area.

Saturday morning, we were up bright and early and headed to SAFF!  I kinda lost my senses when we first got there because I wanted to go directly to the Grafton Fibers booth for some of their incredible batts.  I found where they were supposed to be, identified what should have been their neighbor-vendors – but NO Grafton Fibers!  WTF?!?!  I guess they sold out at Rhinebeck or didn’t think it was worth the trouble to come to SAFF.  I was bummed.  I quickly made several purchases to boost my falling spirits.  The spirit-lifting booty pics will be posted later; even with the time change, getting to work on time this morning was a challenge.

I bought lots of fiber (a little under 4 lbs.), a Kromski niddy-noddy, a 1 oz. spindle from Wooden Ewe, and three skeins of yarn from Brooks Farm (Hey guys!  Thanks for coming to SAFF!).  My purchases paled in comparison to Grace’s – she bought a bunny!

Meet Sugar Ray – angora bunny and very well-behaved traveller!  Grace said she’s going to throw some angora my way too – woo hoo!  More fiber to spin!

The PEOPLE, now, the people were the best part of SAFF.  The vendors who were happy to talk to you about how they made their colorways, the characteristics of various types of wool, or the propensity of alpacas to just drop dead.  The spinners just spinning away.  The gathering of knitters and bloggers and knitting bloggers.  They were the best!  Jen and La and Claudia, Pixie, Stacey, Anita and Steven (?), Knittingmonkey or is it Monkeyknits (edited to add – it’s Fibremonkey), and SO MANY OTHERS!  I tell ya, it warmed my heart to see all those folks knitting the stands, wearing their beautiful Dale of Norway sweaters, Clapotis, Manos jackets, etc.  Yes, I even wore my hat!  It was hot, but this was definitely the time to identify yourself as a knitter by proudly donning your handknits! CIMG1585-1.JPG I had such a great time talking to everyone.  Stacey – I loved seeing you again! You almost had me talked into buying a fleece, I was looking hard at them Sunday.  Maybe next year.  Jen and La – you’re both a riot, thank you for the encouragement (“what’s wrong with predrafting?”) and I hope we run into each other soon!  Pixie – I hope you’ve recovered, you’ll probably need a month of rest from your travels!  Claudia – I envy your wheel but have a feeling I’m not too far behind ya, girl!  It was great meeting everyone. But Bekka?  I want you to know I actually asked a girl if she was the blogger who wrapped roving around their head because she resembled you.  I was sad that she wasn’t you because I had some gorgeous Ashland Bay roving that would have made a lovely hat.   CIMG1575-1.JPG

I’m feeling quite retarded today. I need another vacation where I just relax and do nothing but knit and/or spin.

P.S. I stole the picture of Sugar Ray.

P.P.S. I used my spindle last night and I think I’m getting the hang of it.

I just love angora rabbits. A good friend of mine in high school raised them.
