Wonky*

I want to knit everything!  I have so many projects I want to do, and I have been so good about not casting on for anything new (in support of Get ‘Er Done Month, ya know) but dang it, I NEED fingerless mitts to survive afternoons in the office and I NEED the Wanderlust Hoodie now that it’s getting colder, and I NEED a new hat to wear to SAFF (out of handspun, of course).  I guess I NEED my job more than any of these things, but that’s the one thing I don’t WANT.  Can you relate?

Onto some pictures…

My two pounds of mill ends roving came in, and contrary to what I might hope for, Becky, I won’t be able to knit an entire sweater from this!  Not when I’m spinning on a heavy beginner’s spindle and can’t get thinner than a DK weight.  But – SAFF is coming up and near the very top of my shopping list are lightweight spindles!

I dyed 8 oz. of the white/brown roving, using a small amount of King’s Blue.  I was hoping it would be variegated tones of blue and I wish now I’d used a little more dye, but I’m pretty happy with the result.  Appreciate these pictures – I set off the house alarm this morning in order to take them – what a way to start the weekend!

This stuff has been really hard to spin.  I don’t know if I felted the fiber a little during the dyeing/cooling off process, or if I’m not splitting off thin enough strands to spin from, but there are times that I’m fighting it and the spindle just does.not.want.to.spin.  I hope it gets better or I’m going to have a grudge against this yarn.

I swatched in the car this morning while the good man at Crestwood Chevron (whose grandmother used to knit footies each year for Christmas and who wishes he had a pair this morning as it was cold!) (I love the stories people tell you when they see you’re knitting, don’t you?) patched the hole in my tire (continuing the Good Friday Morning theme).

This is the handspun I showed last time.  It’s going to be fingerless mitts once I decide on a pattern.  Am I the only one who swatches and THEN looks for a pattern to match the gauge?

*That’s how I described my blog header to Sgt. Britty.  He wanted to know where I’ve picked up this “word.”  I told him I’d read it somewhere.  I know it’s from knitbloggers, but is it strictly a knitting term?  I think not.  In fact, I think it pretty much describes my morning, my current state of mind, and quite possibly – me.

I say WONKY all the time . . . most often when describing my state of mind. ;-)

I always thought wonky was a Brit term – definitely remember Miss Marple saying it. I think she was decribing a cat’s ear that had been injured in a fight and was a bit infected. Now wanker is a Brit term and I use it a lot, but Miss Marple most definitely never said wanker.
