happy accidents

I like to think that everything happens for a reason, karma is in charge, and all is as it’s meant to be.  We’d planned to go backpacking last weekend, but since Don didn’t get the hot tub running until Saturday morning, we weren’t able to leave straight from the soccer game as planned.  By the time we went to the game, ate lunch, and went back home to make sure the new wiring hadn’t burned down the house, the sun was out in full force and we knew that hiking, even a short distance, would be hot, sweaty and full of gnats and mosquitoes.  Not the way either one of us wanted to spend Sgt. Britty’s birthday* weekend – especially now that the hot tub was working!

So we watched some football, I spun the rest of the roving I’d dyed, gave it a bath and set the twist.  I was worried it would bleed terribly because my hands and spindle both picked up a fair amount of red dye while spinning, but it turned out just fine.

Why does it get kinkier after the twist is set?  It looked balanced beforehand.

When it was dry, I wound the two skeins of singles into balls.  Exactly 138 yards each – I bet I couldn’t do that again if I tried! Before I set the twist, I Andean plied a small amount of singles that wouldn’t fit on the spindle, no matter how hard I tried to force it.  I like this, but decided to knit with singles this time around.

Any suggestions on what to do with 11 yards of a funky two-ply?

I love this yarn so much that I’ve started knitting with it, alternating between the two balls.  But my Dugger Mountain scarf (because these colors remind me of the fall leaves on Dugger) – she is shy – and would only allow the camera a peek.
