Koigu and Unibroue, Or Why I love Canada

Whew!  Back from Memphis!  Tom Waits was AWESOME, I am so glad we went!  He played the one song I really wanted to hear – Invitation to the Blues – but I loved everything he sang.  I know they’re all the rage right now, but Tom Waits is a real pirate.

Memphis was great, too!  We had wonderful meals at Lolo’s Table, Sawaddii and The Beauty Shop and really great beer at The Flying Saucer:

Thus began my love affair with Canada.  Unibroue ROCKS!  Except for one beer Sgt. Britty got on his sampler tray, all the brews were thoroughly enjoyed and deliciously different from what we can get here in the ‘ham.  Alabama’s liquor laws need to be revised AND SOON!!!

Sgt. Britty really loved his sampler trays.  Ahem. We saw Spiderman downtown:

And these adorable faux row houses on the way to The Yarn Studio: CIMG1228.JPGYes!  I went to yarn shops!  I’m a bad blogger because I didn’t get the yarn seller’s name at The Yarn Studio, but she was very helpful and let me snap photos of the new mohair from Colinette, ParisienneCIMG1211.JPG

These colors are just incredible!  I think some of them found their way home with me.  As did a previously unknown-to-me luxury yarn that has been raved about and admired on many a blog…KOIGU!!!

Here’s the first yarn haul, from Yarniverse (where they have this hanging on the front door).

That’s one skein of an incredible, multi-colored loosely-plied yarn that I couldn’t pass up, even though I’ve sworn off buying single skeins because you know, you just can’t do much with a single skein which I didn’t realize when I first started buying yarn and thought 175 yards?  That’s enough for a sweater, right?  Ha!  And two skeins of Koigu!!!  I love it!  I had to swatch it on the drive home, but this is destined for the frog pond because 72 stitches in Koigu is too.darn. big.  I’m learning….

Ah, but isn’t it pretty?!?!  It’s like knitting with a new box of paints.  And yes, I said “box”, like paints used to come in, before everything went plastic.  I totally understand now why everyone is in love with this yarn.  Because I am too.  I’ll fight ya for her!

Here’s the haul from The Yarn Studio:

L-R – one skein (!) Koigu (I realize I can’t knit a sweater with it but I couldn’t leave it behind); two skeins Colinette Parisienne in Jay for some future lacy shawl (Flowerbasket?); Regia in pretty pinks and browns; more Parisienne in Castagna and one skein of Kidsilk Haze in a luscious pale pink that looks gorgeous with the Castagna (thanks to an enabler in the store who verablized what I was thinking and ensured I could NOT leave the store without all of this).

There has been a little knitting in between the beer drinking and pirate-musicianman-seeing.

The first third of the test knit from SWTC!  This has really been a challenge.  Knitting lace (even with soysilk yarn, which can’t be nearly as difficult as laceweight) requires more concentration than I’m accustomed to giving, so there has been much ripping back and cursing at my house.  I finally got past the first lace panel and am now on the neck ribbing, and I know the second lace panel will be much easier.  I can’t wait to see it blocked!

P.S.  I can write some really long entries, eh?

P.P.S.  See?  See the Canadian coming out in me?  “Eh?”  heh!

P.P.P.S.  Our little spider is all grown up:

Sampler trays can be so much fun! With all the singles skeins you should knit something completely for fun and that you get to touch all the time. Like door knob cozys.

Haha! I love Emily’s idea about the door-knob cozy. I need to try that with my favorite yarns that I CAN’T STOP FONDLING. Arrrrrgh!

Thanks for sharing all these wonderful photos. We get to live vicariously :-)
