Talk math to me, baby

Numbers are sexy.  Mathematic terms have an effect on me that is difficult to explain.  Math is like a foreign language to my ears, incomprehensible and at the same time irresistible.  Have I ever mentioned that Sgt. Britty seriously considered being a math teacher?  Ahem.

I never took a math class beyond Algebra.  I might never have taken up knitting had I known it would involve math.  Yes, I love to hear math, but doing it is another thing altogether.  But sometimes, you have to do what’s necessary for the greater good.

The beginning of Yellow Jacket.  I’m pretty happy with my segway from the blacks and grays to the yellows and browns, but I want it to be wider.  It’s lying on the Neverending Man Scarf, a WIP since Easter.  It’s half as wide, about 4″.  I haven’t cut any ends, in case the math works out and I can start over, adding several inches to the width.

The math.

I weighed the scarf, one bamboo needle size 8, and the remainder of the two skeins I’m working from on our postal scale.  Total = 3.6 oz.  Total weight of skeins only = 2.0 oz.  If 1 skein = 50 grams, and 50 grams = 1.7635 oz., then 3 skeins = 5.2905 oz and there’s 2 oz., or 56.7 grams, left on the skeins, meaning I’ve knit a teensy bit less than one skein and I haven’t had nearly enough coffee, chocolate, or Diet Coke today, not to mention ANY alcohol, to be doing these calculations, have 106.70 grams left.  And that’s the easy part.

If the scarf in its current form measures 4″ wide and 20″ long, taking 44.30 grams to get to that point, if I knit on, the finished scarf will be about 60″ long.  That’s a good length for a scarf.  Certainly long enough for a double neck wrap, to make up for the narrow width.

I can live with that.

Edit:  I could live with the narrowness of the scarf, but not the colors.  The gray clashed too badly with the yellow, orange and browns, which didn’t become apparent until I started knitting with the orange.  So, back to the drawing board.  Translation:  new pattern, new idea, or new yarn purchase.  *sigh*

I made that multidirectional scarf too and loved it. It is such a cool pattern.

If you block it, it might gain a little more in length, too. It looks fabulous!
